Project Manager – Major Earthworks | Lower Thames Crossing
Location: Basildon, Essex
Salary: £85,000 – £99,000 per annum
The Opportunity
Green Barks Search is working with one of the UK's leading earthworks contractors to appoint an experienced Project Manager for the Lower Thames Crossing project in Essex.
Our client specialises in large-scale bulk earthworks, soil stabilisation and land restoration, with an established track record delivering major UK infrastructure projects including HS2, Sizewell C and the Lower Thames Crossing.
As Project Manager, you will lead one of two sectional delivery teams, taking responsibility for the safe, productive and profitable delivery of a major earthworks package.
Reporting directly to the Earthworks Operations Leader and Project Senior Leadership Team, you will oversee day-to-day operations, maintain strong stakeholder relationships and lead a team focused on delivering high standards of safety, quality and operational performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead a sectional delivery team, ensuring earthworks are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with programme requirements.
- Maintain strong working relationships with clients, stakeholders and members of the public when required.
- Take ownership of all works under your control, maintaining high standards of delivery and operational performance.
- Keep the Senior Leadership Team informed of progress, emerging risks and potential project issues.
- Work closely with Central Support, Commercial and Health & Safety teams to ensure coordinated project delivery.
- Manage project information and documentation, ensuring accurate reporting and effective communication.
- Apply technical knowledge of earthmoving methods, plant capabilities, production outputs and operational constraints.
- Produce resourced programmes and develop working budgets to support effective project delivery.
- Ensure compliance with earthworks specifications and materials handling requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity and cost effectiveness.
- Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring unsafe working practices are identified and addressed.
- Lead, motivate and develop team members, supporting their performance and professional development.
- Deputise for wider project leadership when required.

What We're Looking For
- Extensive experience within civil engineering, preferably with a strong background in earthworks.
- Experience delivering linear earthworks projects.
- Previous experience in a Project Management or Senior Management position.
- Strong understanding of modern earthmoving methods, heavy plant, production outputs and associated technologies.
- In-depth knowledge of earthworks specifications, materials handling and operational constraints.
- Ability to produce resourced programmes and manage working budgets.
- Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery requirements.
- Excellent organisational skills, including managing substantial project documentation.
- Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to identify improvements to working methods.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate and engage teams at all levels.
- Confidence making decisions under pressure, with a calm and adaptable approach.
- Strong communication and stakeholder relationship management skills.
- Relevant CSCS card.
