Project Manager – SmartSpace

Location: UK Wide

Wates are looking for a Project Manager to join our SmartSpace team, providing project leadership across a diverse portfolio of commercial new build, fit out, and refurbishment projects. Our work spans commercial offices, retail, residential, banking, and public and private sector schemes across the UK.

If you are a Project Manager with strong technical capability who enjoys challenging convention, bringing fresh ideas, and delivering high-quality fit out environments, this is an excellent opportunity to further develop your career within a market-leading contractor.

To be well suited to this role, you will have proven experience delivering commercial or mixed-use fit out and refurbishment projects, ideally within live or complex environments. You'll be comfortable working across varying asset types and client profiles, and motivated by delivering solutions that balance quality, programme, and commercial performance.

About The Role

Our Project Managers are a critical part of our business. The focus of this role is to provide visible leadership, insight, coordination, and foresight in the safe, compliant, and efficient delivery of projects, while maintaining excellent client relationships and mentoring site and project teams.

This position will involve nationwide travel, aligned with current and future project requirements across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and managing project briefs, programmes, and budgets, ensuring timely delivery against agreed milestones
  • Leading on-site teams, coordinating subcontractors, and maintaining high standards of quality and finish
  • Monitoring project budgets, managing variations, controlling costs, and approving progress claims
  • Acting as the primary client interface, providing clear, regular progress updates and ensuring client satisfaction
  • Ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, including RAMS and risk assessments
  • Managing project documentation including RFIs, change control, and snagging processes
  • Supporting, mentoring, and deputising for the Project Director when required
