Senior Project Manager (Location: UK or Poland)
Location: UK or Poland (residents only – relocation and sponsorship not provided)
Role Purpose
The Project Manager will manage the design, development, planning, and implementation of large-scale projects across product lines through a matrix of internal and external resources and partnerships. Key responsibilities include overseeing project strategy, execution, risk management, stakeholder alignment, and value delivery to ensure global business objectives are met.
The role demands professional leadership and people management for medium-to-large-scale projects, guiding virtual, dispersed teams to deliver high-quality products and services efficiently while driving continuous improvement and risk resilience.
Main Accountabilities
Project Leadership & Management
- Drives vision and strategy for the project, ensuring alignment with key business priorities while remaining adaptable to evolving needs and insights.
- Provides people leadership for medium-to-large-scale projects, taking end-to-end ownership for delivering measurable impact and value beyond milestones.
- Develops data-driven, risk-aware, and dynamic project plans that remain responsive to dependencies and shifting priorities.
- Ensures teams are equipped to succeed, adjusting resources, structure, and ways of working to foster effectiveness.
- Balances pace, cost, and quality while maintaining a focus on lasting outcomes and organisational value.
Project Development
- Challenges and shapes early business cases, ensuring they are outcome-focused and evidence-based.
- Guides initiatives from concept to delivery, maintaining alignment between strategy and execution.
- Expands external networks to integrate professional best practices, improving the British Council’s project management methodologies and tools.
Performance, Reporting & Resourcing
- Ensures the right skills and capabilities are in place, adjusting team capacity across internal and partner organisations.
- Defines clear success measures, KPIs, and performance indicators, aligning them with stakeholder expectations and organisational strategy.
- Leads retrospectives and lessons-learned sessions, embedding continuously improved delivery practices and sharing insights organisation-wide.
Customers & Stakeholders
- Supports senior management relationships across the British Council and externally to align with strategic vision and ensure value realisation.
- Builds and maintains effective relationships with internal teams and external partners to drive project goals and stakeholder buy-in.
- Communicates with transparency, clarity, and confidence, keeping stakeholders informed of progress, risks, options, and outcomes.

- Negotiates, procures, and authorises agreements with partners/sub-contractors, managing risks for cost efficiency and optimal delivery.

Certification & Qualifications
- Project management qualification (e.g., SAFe, Agile, PRINCE2, PMP) and/or equivalent industry experience.
- First-degree equivalent qualification or relevant tertiary education.
Essential & Desirable Experience
Minimum (Essential) Experience
- Proven experience leading multi-million-pound global projects for multinational organisations, including procurement and supplier management (on a case-by-case basis).
- Familiarity with formal project planning tools (e.g., Miro, Jira, Confluence, Microsoft Project).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for internal and external reporting (Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Fluency in English required.
- Residency in either the UK or Poland with valid work authorisation.
Preferred (Desirable)
- Experience in digital/online/technology projects on a global scale.
- Ability to support contract negotiation with external partners.
- Background in designing assessments or learning programmes.

Commercial & Financial Acumen
- Experience in managing high-value budgets, delivering value for money and negotiating cost-effective supplier agreements.
- Financially savvy, making evidence-based decisions to enhance efficiency and impact.
Methodological Flexibility
- Deep foundation in recognised project management frameworks (Agile, PRINCE2, PMP, SAFe).
- Outcome-driven rather than methodology-bound, applying best practices adaptively.
