About the Role

Express Recruitment are working with an established technology-led engineering business that designs and delivers sophisticated software solutions used within highly automated operational environments.

As part of continued investment into their project delivery capability, they are looking to appoint an experienced Software Project Manager to join their growing technical team.

This position will take ownership of customer software projects from initial scoping and planning through to implementation, acceptance and final handover. You’ll work across a small and agile team structure, bringing together specialists from Software Development, Product, Architecture, Commercial and Engineering to keep delivery aligned against agreed timescales, budgets and customer requirements.

It’s a particularly good opportunity for someone who enjoys being at the centre of technically complex projects, combining structured project control with regular customer interaction. You’ll be accountable for project performance, including forecasting, risk management, resource coordination and change control, while helping ensure potential issues are identified and addressed well before they impact delivery.

Due to the nature of the position, there will be occasional requirements to support customer implementations and go-lives, including some out-of-hours work when required and candidates must be based within a commutable distance (3 days per week minimum) of the Nottingham office.

Skills & Experience

  • Candidates should be eligible to pass BS7858 Vetting – which requires 5 years UK continuous address history and the client does not offer Visa Sponsorship opportunities.
  • Proven experience managing end-to-end software or technology projects within a customer-facing environment.
  • Strong commercial awareness with previous responsibility for project budgets, delivery schedules, evolving requirements and the financial impact of scope changes.
  • Good understanding of software development and release processes, including experience working alongside technical teams using Agile, hybrid or similar delivery methodologies.
  • Confident coordinating contributors across multiple departments without direct management responsibility, with the ability to challenge priorities and resolve competing demands.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and reporting skills, ideally supported by experience with Jira, Azure DevOps, MS Project or similar tools, with PRINCE2, APM, PMP or equivalent certification advantageous.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
