Solar Installation Project Manager

Field based with National Travel

The Solar Installation Project Manager is responsible for delivering solar PV projects across the UK, from contract award through to commissioning and handover. The role oversees planning, procurement, construction, grid connection, compliance, and financial performance to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

This position requires strong leadership, knowledge of UK grid and regulatory processes, and experience managing subcontractors and multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Project Delivery & Programme Management

  • Manage end-to-end delivery of solar PV installations (rooftop, ground-mount, carport)
  • Develop and maintain detailed project programmes (Gantt charts)
  • Coordinate design, procurement, and construction phases
  • Monitor project milestones, risks, and critical paths
  • Ensure timely commissioning and client handover

Financial & Commercial Management

  • Manage project budgets and cost control
  • Review subcontractor quotations and initiate purchase orders
  • Monitor variations and change orders
  • Report financial performance to senior management

Grid & Regulatory Coordination

  • Support DNO applications and grid connection processes (G98/G99)
  • Ensure compliance with planning permissions and building control
  • Maintain compliance with MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) standards
  • Ensure works comply with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations
  • Manage commissioning and energisation approvals

Contractor & Stakeholder Management

  • Appoint and manage subcontractors and suppliers
  • Lead site meetings and client progress meetings
  • Liaise with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)
  • Maintain strong client relationships and manage expectations

Health, Safety & Quality

  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations 2015
  • Review and approve RAMS
  • Monitor site safety performance
  • Ensure QA/QC procedures are followed
  • Conduct site Pre-starts, Inspections, Audits, and Practical Completions

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • 3+ years’ project management experience in solar, renewables, or electrical construction
  • Strong knowledge of UK commercial solar PV systems
  • Experience managing subcontractors and multi-site projects
  • Understanding of DNO grid application processes (G98/G99)
  • Proficient in MS Project, Excel, and project management software
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable:

  • SMSTS qualification
  • IOSH or NEBOSH certification
  • Electrical background (18th Edition advantageous)
  • Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • Experience with battery storage or EV charging integration

Work Environment

Hybrid (office + site-based across the UK)
Regular travel to project locations
