Role – P&C Design Engineer

Location – UK / Travel Across Multiple Project Sites Required

Mint Selection are partnered with a leading organisation within the energy sector to recruit an experienced Protection & Control Design Engineer to support the delivery of major UK electrical infrastructure projects.

The position will support the design and engineering of protection and control systems across electrical substations and wider grid infrastructure. Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for producing and reviewing protection and control design documentation, ensuring systems are designed in accordance with project requirements, client standards and relevant industry regulations.

The successful candidate will work closely with clients, DNOs, TSOs, EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers and wider engineering teams throughout the design and delivery lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce detailed protection and control designs for electrical substations and associated grid infrastructure.
  • Develop protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams and associated engineering drawings.
  • Produce and review Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), protection schematics and control circuit diagrams.
  • Develop protection and control philosophies in line with project requirements and client standards.
  • Design protection schemes for HV and EHV electrical networks.
  • Develop control circuits for switchgear, circuit breakers, isolators, transformers and associated substation equipment.
  • Produce cable schedules, termination diagrams, wiring schedules and interconnection drawings.
  • Develop and review protection settings documentation and associated engineering calculations where required.
  • Design interfaces between protection relays, IEDs, RTUs, SCADA systems and substation control equipment.
  • Support the development and integration of IEC 61850-based protection and control systems.
  • Review and interpret client specifications, network standards and technical requirements.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant British Standards, IEC standards and client-specific engineering standards.
  • Carry out design reviews and technical checks to ensure accuracy, quality and compliance.
  • Identify design issues and coordinate technical solutions with project and engineering teams.
  • Liaise with clients, DNOs, TSOs, EPC contractors, manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Work closely with SCADA, telecommunications, civil, electrical and commissioning teams to ensure effective system integration.
  • Review equipment specifications and technical documentation from manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Support design changes, technical queries and engineering modifications throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide technical support during project delivery where design clarification or modification is required.
  • Ensure all design documentation is produced and maintained to the required project standards.
  • Support the production of final as-built documentation and engineering records.

Experience Required

  • Minimum five years’ experience working within Protection & Control engineering and design.
  • Strong experience designing protection and control systems for HV/EHV substations or electrical grid infrastructure.
  • Experience producing protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams and associated engineering documentation.
  • Strong understanding of HV electrical protection systems and substation control principles.
  • Experience working with protection relays, IEDs, CTs, VTs, circuit breakers, isolators and associated substation equipment.
  • Understanding of protection schemes including overcurrent, earth fault, differential, distance and transformer protection.
  • Experience with substation control systems and interfaces between Protection & Control and SCADA.
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 and modern substation automation architectures.
  • Ability to interpret Single Line Diagrams, protection schematics, wiring diagrams and electrical drawings.
  • Experience working to DNO, TSO, utility, EPC or client-specific engineering standards.
  • Experience using electrical engineering and design software packages relevant to protection and control design.
  • Strong understanding of engineering design processes, document control and technical assurance.
  • Experience reviewing and checking engineering designs produced by other engineers or design teams.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ability to manage technical deliverables and meet project deadlines.
  • Relevant electrical engineering qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  • Willingness and ability to travel across the UK where required.
