Role purpose

As Protocol Officer, you will play a key role in bringing the Royal Hospital Chelsea's most significant ceremonies, events and official engagements to life. Working with the Royal Household Private Office, military organisations and distinguished guests, you will ensure every occasion reflects the exceptional standards, heritage, and values of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Contract: Full-time and permanent. Interviews: Scheduled for week commencing 16 November 2026.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver Founder’s Day and other ceremonial, military and VVIP events.
  • Provide protocol advice and liaise with Private Offices, embassies and regimental associations.
  • Supervise pensioners and volunteers supporting the Protocol Office.
  • Coordinate the Governor’s briefings, meetings and correspondence.
  • Be part of the Duty Officer rota, helping to support the Hospital community outside normal working hours, including weekends. On-site accommodation is available, with rent set according to the property provided.

Skills and experience

We're looking for someone who combines service in the British Armed Forces with outstanding organisational and relationship-building skills. You will bring:

  • A strong understanding of military structures, ceremonial practice and protocol.
  • Proven experience of planning and delivering high-profile events.
  • Experience of building effective relationships with senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong communication, influencing and relationship-building skills.
  • Sound judgement, discretion and diplomacy when handling sensitive or confidential matters.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
