Job Type: 6 months FTC (parental cover)

Location: This role is based in our London office, with some flexibility to work between the office and home. We will discuss what is important to you and balancing this with business requirements during the recruitment process. Salary and Benefits: c. £100,000 (subject to experience), plus bonus, private medical cover, 38 days annual leave, excellent pension, 12x salary life assurance, career breaks, income protection, 3x volunteering days and much more.


We’re looking for a qualified Pension Risk Transfer (PRT) Business Development Manager with strong experience in driving and implementing the business development strategy for the bulk annuity proposition, to help us shape better retirements across the UK. In our Defined Benefits Solutions team, you’ll play a key role in strengthening relationships with external parties and improving the perception of Standard Life in the market to maximise our market perception and drive our business strategy. This is a great FTC opportunity, that will be hired on a 6-months basis to cover parental leave.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Lead pipeline management, including early engagement with EBCs and clients on transactions yet to come to market to feed into planning cycles and best position Standard Life ahead of the process.
  • Confidently communicate and advocate our PRT proposition, including maintaining an in-depth understanding of our capabilities, business strategy (including wider Group propositions), and key topics in the wider pensions, economic and political landscape.
  • Communicate effectively with a technical actuarial audience and simplify communications of technical issues to a non-technical audience. Confidently presenting at industry events on behalf of Standard Life.
  • Collaborate with the PRT Transaction Managers to deliver on key priorities for the PRT proposition.
  • Oversee and drive input needed from Standard Life colleagues to deliver our business development priorities.
  • Develop ongoing management and distribution of key Management Information (MI) in relation to business development efforts, including data best practice to maintain distribution lists for publications, identification of relationships with individuals in the team, and recording of past and upcoming meetings.
  • Manage effective knowledge sharing on market developments, trends and business news.

Relationship Management

  • Maintain strong internal relationships, particularly with Client Services, Workplace, Sustainability and Marketing/PR.
  • Managing and developing existing relationships, including PRT clients (working with Client Services) and wider business clients such as Workplace, to maximise our chances of securing further business (including exclusivity cases) and ensure existing client satisfaction.
  • Build and manage external relationships with key industry figures, including professional independent trustee firms, in-house pensions managers and chairs of large schemes, key EBCs brokers and lawyers.
  • Regularly interface with the following:
    • Internal: Senior Leadership across the function, Finance, Capital Management, Line 2
    • External: Partners at Employee Benefit Consultancies, Professional Trustees, Legal partners

Brand Advocacy & Market Presence

  • Drive marketing and PR strategy with respective teams, advocate for PRT in Group-wide marketing and PR forums / discussions. Leverage work being done by the wider business to promote and develop the Standard Life brand.
  • Develop relationships with media representatives and confidently drive narrative with journalists. Be an ambassador for Standard Life, attending industry and networking events, being a “face” of Standard Life in the market. Utilise industry events to develop connections and establish leads.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, develop, coach and mentor team members as required to maximise their contribution, ensure they have fulfilling careers

What are we looking for?

Experience and Knowledge (Essential)

  • Significant experience of leading and managing the execution of PRT Deals or similar gained within an Employee Defined Consultants, bulk annuity provider, or reinsurer
  • Demonstrates strong commercial acumen, with a proactive and results-oriented approach to building robust pipelines, sourcing high-value opportunities, and strategically advocating our PRT proposition to key decision-makers, underpinned by a deep understanding of the needs and challenges impacting the UK defined benefit pensions market
  • Deep knowledge of latest industry practices, regulatory requirements, and techniques for arranging and managing PRT deals
  • Strong existing network across the DB (defined benefit) pensions universe, including EBCs, legal firms, and professional trustees
  • Proven ability to manage diverse stakeholders, translating complex concepts for technical audiences while simplifying technical issues for non-technical stakeholders

Skills and Personal Attributes

This role will suit individuals who combine strong analytical capability with a deep understanding of the UK defined benefit pensions market. You’ll be adept at interpreting external trends and internal data to provide meaningful insights that support strategic decisions. Success requires the ability to work to tight deadlines without compromising accuracy or professional standards, while building and maintaining trusted relationships with clients, prospects, and key stakeholders. Your exceptional market knowledge and commercial awareness will enable you to anticipate challenges and identify opportunities that drive business growth.

Qualifications & Certifications:

  • Applicants will ideally hold a University Degree (or similar) in a relevant field.
  • Qualified Actuary
