About the Role
The EDPS works at the frontline of acute care in close partnership with the John Radcliffe Hospital Emergency Department. The post holder will be working with adolescents and their families, developing short-term talking treatments to address emotional crises, self-harm, and suicidality within the Brief Interventions for Repeat Self-Harm (BIRSH) service within EDPS, which offers timely, brief, evidence-based interventions for young people and adults presenting following self-harm or suicide attempts.
In this role, you will:
- Play a central part in supporting people at a point of acute distress.
- Contribute to robust risk management and safety planning.
- Deliver short-term psychological interventions aimed at reducing distress and supporting recovery and stabilisation.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and liaise with community services to ensure safe and effective continuity of care.
EDPS offers specialist assessments and discharge planning to patients aged 13 years and upwards attending with a broad spectrum of mental health presentations as well as self-harm.
The post also sits within a research-active team with strong links to the Oxford Centre for Suicide Research, offering opportunities to utilise and contribute to the evidence base.

Key Responsibilities
- Undertake short-term, evidence-informed treatment with young people presenting to the ED with self-harm and/or suicidality.
- Manage, formulate, and implement treatment plans as part of the BIRSH clinic.
- Assess and manage risk alongside young people and their families, and escalate concerns about significant risk to clinical and operational leaders as required.
- Proactive support planning and liaison to manage risk as best as possible and actively engage with both child and adult Safeguarding processes.
- Assess, plan, set goals with the service user, carers, and families; implement and evaluate care using psycho-social interventions and skills to meet individual needs.
- Deliver individual therapeutic activity using therapeutic interventions and skills.
The post holder must be willing to work in other areas of EDPS where circumstances require this of them – this includes supporting assessments, background checks, liaising with other teams, ED staff, families, etc., as required to support the wider team.
