Locum Consultant Psychiatrist – Forensics

Location: Rochester

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: Initial 3-month contract

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00

Hours: 32 hours per week / 4 days per week

Working Arrangement: On-site only

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to provide high-quality psychiatric care within HMP Rochester / Cookham Wood. This is an excellent opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist with previous UK, forensic and/or prison psychiatry experience to join the service on an initial three-month locum contract, with the potential for extension.

The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and provide effective clinical leadership and psychiatric assessment and treatment to patients within the prison environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients within the prison setting.
  • Manage a clinical caseload independently, ensuring high standards of patient care.
  • Undertake risk assessments and contribute to appropriate risk management plans.
  • Provide advice and support to the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribute to care planning.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and clinical records are maintained.
  • Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and prison staff.
  • Provide clinical leadership and specialist psychiatric input where required.
  • Ensure all clinical practice is delivered in accordance with relevant professional and organisational standards.

Essential Requirements

  • UK experience in Psychiatry.
  • Previous prison psychiatry experience is essential.
  • AC (Approved Clinician) status.
  • Current Section 12 approval/registration.
  • Previous forensic and/or prison psychiatry experience.
  • Ability to work independently and confidently within a secure environment.
  • Excellent communication and multidisciplinary working skills.
  • Ability to commit to on-site working, Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00, 4 days per week (32 hours).
