The Opportunity
Arup's Data Centre team is expanding, and we are seeking an ambitious Public Health Engineer to join our London office.
This is an opportunity to work on some of the world's most complex and technologically advanced data centre and mission-critical facilities, supporting hyperscale, colocation, enterprise and cloud infrastructure projects across the UK, Europe, and globally.
As part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will contribute to the design and delivery of resilient, sustainable, and high-performing public health systems that support critical infrastructure environments where reliability, efficiency and operational continuity are paramount.
You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, structural and digital engineering specialists to develop innovative solutions for large-scale data centre developments, from concept through to detailed design and construction support.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop public health and fire protection systems for mission-critical data centre facilities.
- Undertake system calculations, equipment sizing and specification in line with industry standards and client requirements.
- Develop water services strategies including domestic water, drainage and specialist systems supporting critical environments.
- Coordinate public health and fire systems with mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural disciplines.
- Support the planning and design of plant rooms, utility connections, distribution routes and critical infrastructure spaces.
- Collaborate with BIM and digital engineering teams to develop coordinated models and project deliverables.
- Produce technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, utility providers and equipment manufacturers throughout project delivery.
- Contribute to sustainable and efficient design solutions that support data centre operational performance and environmental targets.

Requirements
- Degree qualified in Building Services Engineering, Public Health Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience in the design of public health and fire protection systems within complex building projects.
- Experience undertaking public health calculations, hydraulic modelling and system sizing.
- Understanding of industry regulations, building codes and standards relevant to mission-critical environments.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience using BIM and digital design tools would be advantageous.
- Previous exposure to data centre, mission-critical, healthcare or other highly serviced technical facilities is desirable.
