About The Organisation
Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, and with an annual budget of around £101 million. Public Health Scotland wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives, a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.
The Post
The Public Health Science & Analytics Service is made up of approximately 56 staff, committed to improving population health and reducing health inequalities. We focus on the fundamental causes and primary prevention, providing public health intelligence founded in: data analysis; evaluation; research and evidence synthesis.
This post sits in the Evidence for Action team of the Public Health Science & Analytics Service. We use information from a range of sources to better understand the health of the Scottish population, the factors that affect it and we contribute to evaluation, monitoring and evidence synthesis activity.
Examples Of Our Current Work Include
- Development of novel evidence tools to support actions to improve children and young people’s outcomes.
- What works evidence reviews and synthesis across health harming commodities.
- Mapping and appraisal of current and planned policy in areas of public health priority.
- Understanding economic determinants of health and how to deliver an economy that supports health and wellbeing.
These posts are generic and we are required to move between topic areas as the public health landscape changes. However, the immediate focus of this post will be to progress a package of evidence projects focused on Community Wealth Building and identifying interventions to improve Scotland’s life expectancy. Using sound public health intelligence skills this post will contribute to mapping and analysing the policy landscape supporting Community Wealth Building, while providing specialist evidence support towards the implementation of the community wealth building legislation in Scotland. However, previous experience in this topic area is not essential. The postholder will also contribute to evidence reviews on what works to improve life expectancy at a national level. These reviews will contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of Scotland's Population Health Framework.

The Candidate
You will bring strong technical public health intelligence skills and sound knowledge of the social determinants of health. You will be confident in working with complex evidence.
You will have well-developed communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to a range of audiences, including non-specialists. Strong interpersonal and partnership working skills are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively and influence across organisations.

Location and Working Pattern:
The post is based in either Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Bothwell Street, Glasgow. We are currently hybrid working; therefore, you will be expected to spend time in both PHS offices as well as the option to work at home.
The typical work pattern is Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week.
PHS is a flexible employer, and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns
During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.
