Job Opportunity: Public Health Specialist
Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Public Health Knowledge and Intelligence Team at Derbyshire County Council. You will play a key role in improving population health and reducing health inequalities across Derbyshire.
Role Description
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic professional with excellent communication skills and expertise in applying epidemiological and statistical methods. You will help shape public health priorities and decision-making by providing evidence on population health needs, trends, and inequalities.
You will join a supportive and experienced team with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality public health evidence and insight that inform decision-making across the local system. Our work includes health needs assessments, health equity audits, health impact assessments, evaluation, and research. You will analyse and interpret complex data, critically appraise evidence, and translate findings into clear, actionable insights that influence policy, strategy, and service development.
You will lead and contribute to significant epidemiological, research, and evaluation workstreams, provide technical guidance and support to colleagues, and work collaboratively with partners to improve outcomes for the people of Derbyshire. You will play a key role in embedding research and evidence-based practice across local government. The role will involve working collaboratively with council services to identify research priorities, assess existing evidence, and support the development of new research activities that address local challenges and community needs. This includes securing external funding by supporting research grant applications, building research capability among staff through training and mentorship, and promoting the use of robust research methods throughout the organisation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
