Public Health Intelligence Specialist
Closing date: 18 October 2026
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Public Health Knowledge and Intelligence Team at Derbyshire County Council. You will play a key role in improving population health and reducing health inequalities across Derbyshire. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic professional with excellent communication skills and expertise in applying epidemiological and statistical methods. You will help shape public health priorities and decision-making by providing evidence on population health needs, trends and inequalities.
You will join a supportive and experienced team with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality public health evidence and insight that inform decision-making across the local system. Our work includes health needs assessments, health equity audits, health impact assessments, evaluation and research. You will analyse and interpret complex data, critically appraise evidence, and translate findings into clear, actionable insights that influence policy, strategy and service development.
The post is focused on epidemiology, statistical methods and economic evaluation. You will lead and contribute to significant epidemiological, research and evaluation workstreams, provide technical guidance and support to colleagues, and work collaboratively with partners to improve outcomes for the people of Derbyshire.
Subject to eligibility and service requirements, there may be an opportunity for the successful candidate to undertake a Level 7 apprenticeship relevant to the role. The Level 7 Health and Care Intelligence Specialist apprenticeship is a Master's level programme designed for professionals who use data, evidence and research to support decision-making across health and social care organisations. Apprentices develop advanced skills in epidemiology, statistics, health intelligence, data analysis, forecasting and evaluation, enabling them to transform complex health and care data into actionable insights for policymakers, commissioners, service managers and clinical leaders. The apprenticeship combines workplace learning with formal study and prepares practitioners to lead high-level analytical work that influences health and care policy, service planning and patient outcomes

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
