Overview
Hays are recruiting for an experienced Purchase Ledger to join the finance team of an established construction business. This is a busy and varied role responsible for maintaining an accurate and well-controlled purchase ledger. You'll help ensure supplier invoices and credit notes are correctly processed, authorised and prepared for payment.

What you'll be doing...
Reporting to the Management Accountant, your responsibilities will include:
- Processing high volumes of supplier and subcontractor invoices and credit notes
- Matching invoices against purchase orders, delivery records and agreed rates
- Checking coding, VAT treatment, project allocation and authorisation
- Investigating discrepancies, duplicate invoices and missing documentation
- Reconciling supplier statements and resolving outstanding items
- Maintaining accurate supplier accounts and records
- Preparing proposed payment runs and supporting schedules for approval
- Responding professionally to supplier queries
- Supporting month-end reconciliations, accruals and aged creditor reviews
- Maintaining accurate information across Sage 50, Eque2 and Chimes
- Identifying recurring errors or control issues and escalating them appropriately

What we're looking for...
We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- Previous Purchase Ledger, Accounts Payable or high-volume transactional finance experience
- Experience within construction, contracting, CIS or project-based accounting
- A good understanding of invoice processing, purchase orders, credit notes, supplier reconciliations and VAT documentation
- Confidence using Sage 50, Microsoft Outlook and Excel
- Strong accuracy and the ability to manage a substantial volume of transactions
- The confidence to identify discrepancies and challenge incomplete information
- Clear and professional communication skills
- Strong organisation and the ability to meet deadlines
It would be advantageous if you also had:
- AAT studies or a relevant bookkeeping or accounts qualification
- Previous experience using Eque2, Chimes or a similar construction accounting system
