About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Python AI Engineer to join our client's dynamic team on a contractual basis. This role is based in London with a hybrid working model, offering the flexibility of remote work combined with onsite collaboration. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing production-grade Python services tailored for Generative AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions. This position demands a strong background in building scalable, reliable AI-driven applications, with practical experience delivering complex AI workflows beyond simple prototypes. The ideal candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and optimize AI services that enhance information retrieval, evidence processing, and natural language response generation, ensuring high quality, efficiency, and operational stability.

- Extensive experience developing and deploying production-grade Python applications and microservices.
- Advanced proficiency in Python, including asynchronous programming, type annotations, modular design, and performance optimization techniques.
- Hands-on experience with AI orchestration frameworks such as Pydantic, LangGraph, MS Agent Framework, or Semantic Kernel.
- Proven track record of delivering Generative AI and RAG solutions beyond proof of concept stages.
- Strong understanding of embeddings, vector search, lexical search, hybrid retrieval, reranking, and evidence selection methodologies.
- Experience integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) with structured outputs, tool calling, prompt/version management, token handling, and response validation.
- Experience in building multi-step, agentic, or workflow-based AI applications.
- Solid experience with automated testing frameworks like Pytest, including writing comprehensive unit, integration, and regression tests.
- Familiarity with APIs, distributed systems, version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and production monitoring tools.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable Python services for Generative AI and RAG solutions, ensuring they meet production standards.
- Build and optimize AI workflows involving structured outputs, tool calling, schema validation, and controlled fallback mechanisms.
- Implement advanced retrieval techniques, including vector, lexical, and hybrid methods, along with metadata filtering, reranking, and evidence selection processes.
- Create asynchronous services with proper timeout, retry, cancellation, and exception handling strategies to ensure reliability.
- Develop comprehensive automated tests to validate functionality, performance, and failure handling.
- Implement structured logging, tracing, and operational monitoring to facilitate troubleshooting and system health assessment.
- Monitor system performance, response quality, latency, token consumption, and operational costs, making iterative improvements as needed.
- Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and adherence to engineering standards, providing support for production environments.
