Python Developer – Hardware Test Automation
Location: West Reading, UK (3 days/week onsite)
Employment: Contract (3–4 months initial, potential to extend to 6–8 months)

About Role
We are seeking a Python Developer to join an existing engineering team in West Reading, supporting the development of automated manufacturing test rigs. The team uses Python to control physical test equipment and devices under test, including signal generators, spectrum analysers, VNAs, and PCBAs.
The automation environment is relatively immature, with approximately 5% of planned automation currently completed and a significant roadmap of modules still to develop and architect. This role is focused on practical Python development, hardware test automation, problem-solving, and building reliable, maintainable solutions to boost production test capabilities.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and architect Python scripts for hardware test automation across ancillary products.
- Configure and control physical test equipment (signal generators, spectrum analysers, VNAs, PCBAs), read measurements, and analyse resulting data in sequential, non-time-critical workflows.
- Refactor, reformat, and standardize existing scripts—including code drafted by non-engineers or AI—to ensure compliance with production coding standards, maintainability, and reusability.
- Take test requirements from concept through design, integration, troubleshooting, and regression testing into a production-ready state.
- Work with existing Python libraries and tools, including NumPy, PyPDF, Scapy, and an existing Tkinter GUI interface.
- Present APIs for equipment control and collaborate closely across software, hardware, and mechanical engineering teams.
- Leverage AI acceleration tools thoughtfully while establishing a culture of code maintainability.

Requirements
- Python Experience: A few years of practical Python development experience (ideally junior-to-mid level).
- Test Automation: Strong foundational understanding of test automation principles and writing reusable code.
- Hardware Aptitude: Comfortable working directly with physical hardware/test setups or a strong interest in developing in this space.
- Tooling & Process: Proficiency with Git, source-control repositories, and standard software development practices.
- Problem-Solving & Mindset: Highly motivated, fast-paced self-starter who takes initiative to test out ideas, troubleshoot, and iteratively improve code.
- Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to articulate technical challenges across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
