Senior Python Backend Developer
Remote | Contract | NATO Project
Applicants must currently reside in a NATO member state
Start Date: September 2026
We are seeking an experienced Senior Python Backend Developer to join a high-profile NATO project, contributing to the design, development and delivery of secure, scalable backend services supporting complex data-driven applications.
This is an excellent opportunity for a senior engineer with a strong background in Python, modern backend architecture and cloud-native development to work within an international, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using Python and FastAPI.
- Build and optimise microservices following Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles and best practices.
- Develop and maintain data integration pipelines, supporting graph, relational and geospatial datasets.
- Design and optimise Neo4j graph database models and Cypher queries.
- Work with Databricks to support data engineering and machine learning workflows.
- Deliver secure, high-performance applications with a focus on reliability, scalability and maintainability.
- Implement automated testing, CI/CD pipelines and code quality standards.
- Collaborate closely with architects, DevOps engineers, QA and cross-functional technical teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews and mentoring activities while contributing to architectural decisions.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Extensive commercial experience developing backend applications with Python.
- Strong experience with FastAPI and asynchronous programming.
- Proven expertise in designing RESTful APIs and microservice architectures.
- Practical experience applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
- Strong knowledge of Neo4j, graph data modelling and Cypher.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and SQL database optimisation.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka, MQTT or Azure Event Hubs.
- Experience implementing automated testing using pytest and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong understanding of Git version control and modern software engineering practices.
- Experience implementing secure authentication and authorisation using OAuth2, OpenID Connect and JWT.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
