About The Role
Hays Technology is seeking a highly skilled Platform DevOps Engineer to join a major public-sector technology initiative supporting the UK government’s immigration, visa, passport, and related services. This role is integral to supporting a large-scale cloud-based platform used by UK Home Office staff, overseas consulates, and applicants. The successful candidate will be part of the Platform DevOps team, focusing on developing backend systems, automation tooling, microservices, APIs, and cloud integrations. The role requires expertise in Python and Go, with a focus on automating infrastructure, managing cloud resources, and ensuring seamless platform operations. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, active SC clearance is a mandatory requirement, and only candidates holding current security clearance and meeting nationality criteria will be considered.
Qualifications
- Current active SC clearance (mandatory).
- Extensive experience in Python development within a commercial environment.
- Proven experience building backend systems, automation tools, microservices, and RESTful APIs.
- Strong knowledge of modern Python features including asyncio, type hints, and context managers.
- Hands-on experience with Go, including developing concurrent applications, CLI tools, and REST APIs.
- Familiarity with Go modules, error handling, testing, and code organization best practices.
- Deep experience working with AWS services using boto3 and aws-sdk-go-v2.
- Practical knowledge of AWS EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, and Lambda services.
- Experience automating infrastructure provisioning and managing cloud resources efficiently.
- Understanding of IAM roles, credential management, and secure service integrations.
- Proficiency with Python libraries such as ldap3, hvac, jira, atlassian-python-api, and Kubernetes client libraries.
- Experience integrating with enterprise directories like OpenLDAP and Active Directory.
- Hands-on experience with HashiCorp Vault for secrets management and automation.
- Ability to automate processes within JIRA and Confluence for workflow management.
- Experience with Kubernetes API for deployment automation, cluster management, and pod inspection.
- Strong testing background using pytest, unittest, and mocking tools, with experience integrating tests into CI pipelines.
- Advanced Git skills, including branching strategies, code reviews, and release management.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
- Proficiency with Python code quality tools like flake8, black, and mypy, and Go tools like golangci-lint, go fmt, and go vet.
- Ability to work independently, show initiative, and contribute effectively within a team environment.

Responsibilities
- Design and develop robust backend services, microservices, APIs, and automation tools using Python and Go.
- Create efficient, scalable, and concurrent applications and command-line utilities.
- Automate infrastructure management and cloud resource provisioning on AWS, leveraging services such as EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, and Lambda.
- Manage IAM roles, credentials, and secure integrations to ensure platform security and compliance.
- Integrate applications with enterprise directories like OpenLDAP and Active Directory for authentication and authorization.
- Utilize HashiCorp Vault to automate secret retrieval, renewal, and secure storage processes.
- Develop automation workflows to streamline operational tasks, including ticket creation and documentation updates in JIRA and Confluence.
- Use Kubernetes API to automate deployment processes, manage pods, and perform cluster health checks and inspections.
- Implement comprehensive unit and integration testing for all solutions, ensuring high-quality deliverables.
- Incorporate code quality checks, linting, and security testing into CI/CD pipelines to maintain best practices.
- Participate in code reviews, branching strategies, and release processes using Git, ensuring code integrity and collaboration.
- Share knowledge and best practices with team members, contributing to the overall capability and growth of the delivery team.
