About The Role
Hays Technology is currently seeking an experienced and highly skilled Platform DevOps Engineer to join a critical public-sector technology project supporting UK immigration, visa, passport, and related services. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and maintaining backend systems, automation tooling, microservices, APIs, and cloud integrations within a large-scale, agile environment. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on a transformative platform that enhances government services, utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as Python, Go, AWS, Kubernetes, and enterprise platform automation tools.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in backend development, automation, and cloud infrastructure, with a keen eye for security, efficiency, and scalability. This position requires active SC clearance and is suited for professionals who thrive in dynamic, collaborative environments and are passionate about leveraging technology to improve public services. The role involves working closely with multiple development teams and cloud service providers, ensuring seamless integration, automation, and operational excellence across the platform.

Qualifications
- Current active SC clearance is mandatory.
- Extensive experience in Python development, including modern Python features such as asyncio, type hints, and context managers.
- Proven experience building backend systems, automation tools, microservices, and APIs.
- Hands-on experience with Go, including concurrent applications, CLI tools, and REST API development.
- Strong knowledge of AWS services, particularly EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, and Lambda, with proficiency in boto3 and aws-sdk-go-v2.
- Experience automating cloud infrastructure provisioning and resource management.
- Familiarity with enterprise directory services such as OpenLDAP and Active Directory.
- Experience with HashiCorp Vault for secrets management and automation of token retrieval and renewal.
- Proficiency in integrating with ticketing and documentation tools like JIRA and Confluence.
- Experience with Kubernetes API for deployment automation, cluster management, and pod inspection.
- Strong testing background, including unit and integration testing with pytest, unittest, and Go testing packages.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, using tools such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
- Advanced knowledge of Git workflows, branching strategies, code reviews, and release management.
- Proficiency with code quality tools including flake8, black, mypy, golangci-lint, go fmt, and go vet.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, initiative, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong communication skills and a passion for continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
Responsibilities
- Develop robust backend services, automation tools, microservices, and APIs using Python, ensuring scalability and security.
- Build efficient, concurrent applications and command-line utilities with Go, adhering to best practices in error handling and code organization.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, resource management, and operational workflows within AWS, leveraging services such as EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, and Lambda.
- Manage IAM roles, credentials, and secure integrations with enterprise directories like LDAP and Active Directory.
- Implement secrets management workflows by automating token and secret retrieval using HashiCorp Vault.
- Automate and streamline processes related to JIRA and Confluence, including task creation, documentation workflows, and process automation.
- Utilize Kubernetes API to automate deployment pipelines, manage cluster resources, and monitor pod health and status.
- Create comprehensive unit and integration tests for Python and Go solutions, ensuring code quality and reliability.
- Integrate testing, linting, and code-quality checks into CI/CD pipelines to maintain high standards of software delivery.
- Participate in code reviews, branching strategies, and release management to support continuous delivery and deployment.
- Share knowledge and best practices with team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.
