You will be supporting a major public-sector technology portfolio that is transforming how UK immigration, visa, passport and related services are managed.
The platform is used by UK-based Home Office staff, overseas consulates and people applying for immigration-related services. Delivery involves multiple development teams and cloud service providers working within an agile framework aligned with government IT policy.
The end client's identity will remain confidential at this stage.
Your new role
You will join the Platform DevOps function as a SFIA Level 5 Python and Go engineer. The role will focus on developing backend systems, automation tooling, microservices, APIs and cloud integrations across a large-scale technology platform.
You will use Python and Go to automate infrastructure and operational processes, integrate with AWS services and work with enterprise platforms including Kubernetes, HashiCorp Vault, LDAP, JIRA and Confluence.
Please note: Active SC clearance is a mandatory requirement for this position. Due to the nature of the programme, only candidates who currently hold SC clearance and meet the nationality requirements will be considered.
Key responsibilities
- Develop backend services, automation tools, microservices and APIs using Python.
- Build efficient and concurrent applications, services and command-line tools using Go.
- Integrate applications and automation with AWS using boto3 and aws-sdk-go-v2.
- Automate cloud resource management and infrastructure provisioning.
- Work with services including EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch and Lambda.
- Manage IAM roles, credentials and secure service integrations.
- Integrate with enterprise directories such as OpenLDAP and Active Directory.
- Automate the retrieval and renewal of secrets and tokens using HashiCorp Vault.
- Automate tasks, ticket creation and documentation workflows across JIRA and Confluence.
- Use the Kubernetes API to automate deployments, manage pods and inspect clusters.
- Develop unit and integration tests for Python and Go solutions.
- Incorporate tests, linters and code-quality checks into CI/CD pipelines.
- Contribute to branching, code-review and release processes using Git.
- Share knowledge and contribute to the capability of the wider delivery team.

What you'll need to succeed
- Current active SC clearance (mandatory).
- Strong commercial Python development experience.
- Experience building backend systems, automation tooling, microservices and APIs.
- Knowledge of modern Python features, including asyncio, type hints and context managers.
- Go development experience, including concurrent applications, services, CLI tools and REST APIs.
- Experience with Go modules, error-handling patterns, testing and code organisation.
- Strong AWS experience using boto3 and aws-sdk-go-v2.
- Experience working with EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch and Lambda.
- Experience automating infrastructure provisioning and managing cloud resources.
- Knowledge of IAM roles, credential management and secure service integrations.
- Python experience using relevant libraries and clients, including ldap3, hvac, jira, atlassian-python-api and the official Kubernetes client.
- Experience integrating with OpenLDAP or Active Directory.
- Experience working with HashiCorp Vault for secure secrets management.
- Experience automating JIRA and Confluence processes.
- Kubernetes API experience, including deployment automation, pod management and cluster introspection.
- Python testing experience using pytest, unittest and mocking tools such as unittest.mock and responses.
- Experience using coverage.py and integrating test coverage into CI pipelines.
- Go testing experience using the testing package.
- Familiarity with table-driven tests, test coverage and mock generation using tools such as gomock or testify.
- Advanced Git experience, including branching strategies, code reviews and release workflows.
- CI/CD experience, including GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
- Experience with Python quality tools including flake8, black and mypy.
- Experience with Go quality tools including golangci-lint, go fmt and go vet.
- Ability to show initiative, work diligently, learn independently and contribute as part of a team.
- Passion for technology and willingness to take ownership of shared team knowledge and capability.

What you'll get in return
- A remote contract opportunity supporting a major public-sector technology platform.
- Maximum pay rate £617.55 per day via UMB.
- Contract length: 6 months.
- IR35 status: Inside.
- The opportunity to work across Python, Go, AWS, Kubernetes and enterprise platform automation.
- This position requires additional vetting, so onboarding may take longer than the usual process.
