About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Python Engineer to join our expanding AI engineering team at Ncounter. This role is pivotal in advancing our capabilities in deploying Large Language Model (LLM)-powered solutions across major public sector transformation programs. The ideal candidate will have moved beyond experimental phases of Generative AI and possess substantial experience in engineering production-ready solutions that incorporate LLMs. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams—including architects, consultants, and frontend developers—you will help translate operational challenges into scalable, secure, and reliable AI services.
Your responsibilities will include developing backend services, integrating foundation models, and building sophisticated AI-driven solutions such as enterprise search, document intelligence, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). You will be instrumental in designing prompt strategies, managing production considerations like latency and cost, and exploring agentic workflows with frameworks such as LangChain. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work on impactful projects that directly improve operational decision-making and information discovery within the public sector.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have at least five years of professional experience in Python engineering, with a proven track record of developing and maintaining production backend systems. Expertise in FastAPI, REST API development, asynchronous programming in Python, and database management with PostgreSQL and SQL is essential. Candidates should demonstrate practical experience in integrating LLMs into real-world applications, rather than experimental or personal projects. Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift, as well as CI/CD pipelines and testing frameworks like pytest, is required.
Additional knowledge of Azure cloud services, RAG, pgvector, Chroma, FAISS, Entra ID, OAuth/OIDC, Redis, Terraform, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry will be advantageous. Candidates must currently hold or have recently held SC clearance, reflecting the sensitive nature of the work involved. A strong understanding of security, observability, and reliability best practices in software development is also necessary to succeed in this role.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Python backend services and APIs utilizing FastAPI and asynchronous programming techniques to ensure high performance and scalability.
- Integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) such as OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, or comparable foundation models into production applications, ensuring seamless operation and security.
- Build and optimize RAG, enterprise search, and document intelligence solutions using embeddings and vector databases such as pgvector, Chroma, or FAISS.
- Develop effective prompt strategies while managing operational constraints including latency, cost, retries, and rate limits to ensure reliable AI service delivery.
- Explore agentic workflows and orchestrate LLMs using frameworks like LangChain, enhancing automation and operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with consultants and client stakeholders to understand operational problems and translate them into practical, scalable AI solutions.
- Enhance security, testing, observability, and reliability across deployed applications, adhering to best practices and compliance standards.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of existing services by refactoring, optimizing, and ensuring code quality and maintainability.
