Quality Control Restricted (QCR) Technician – Fixed-Term

About the Role

This fixed-term contract (until 31st December 2027) based within the Quality Control Restricted (QCR) Department at Pirbright supports the testing and release of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) antigen and vaccine batches in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and regulatory standards. The role operates within a high-containment laboratory environment, requiring strict adherence to biosafety protocols and compliance regulations.

Critical Notes:

  • Specified Animal Pathogen Order (SAPO) Level 4 biosafety standards apply, including mandatory clothing changes, showering before exiting, and a 72-hour quarantine from FMDV-susceptible animals post-shift.

Responsibilities

You will play a key role in ensuring efficient, compliant, and high-quality laboratory operations by:

  • Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all tasks and documentation
  • Preparing test materials and reagents for analysis
  • Managing sample reception, logging, and reconciliation via the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Conducting routine laboratory testing, including:
    • Virus Neutralisation Tests
    • Tissue Culture
    • Serotype Identification
    • Microcytopathic Infectivity Testing and Inactivation Kinetics
    • Physical/Chemical Testing
    • Inocuity Testing
    • Sucrose Density Gradient (146S testing)
  • Reviewing and updating SOPs and participating in deviation investigations
  • Supporting change control processes and OOX/discrepancy resolution
  • Maintaining laboratory cleanliness (cleaning, basic equipment upkeep)
  • Operating specialized equipment (e.g., autoclaves, formalin locks) according to protocols
  • Ensuring continuous compliance with GMP, EHS, and biosafety regulations
  • Contributing to quality improvement initiatives

Requirements

  • Ability to follow procedures meticulously in a highly regulated environment
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality/safety standards
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-organization, time management, and task prioritisation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with willingness to learn internal systems
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Alignment with company values and professional conduct policies
  • No prior lab experience? No problem. Willingness to adapt to high-containment conditions
  • Preferred: Relevant education in a scientific discipline or experience with biological lab techniques (e.g., pipetting, microscopy, aseptic techniques)

Work Arrangements

  • Fixed-term contract (until 31st December 2027)
  • On-site role at Pirbright
  • Hours:
    • Monday–Thursday: 08:00–16:30
    • Friday: 08:00–15:30 (37.5 hours per week)
