About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Quality Engineer – Assurance (NDE) to join our team onsite at Barrow-In-Furness. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in supporting the construction and commissioning of the Dreadnought and Astute submarines, ensuring the integrity and quality of non-destructive testing processes. You will oversee NDT strategies, conduct inspections and audits, and provide technical guidance to both internal teams and external stakeholders. This position offers a unique opportunity to work within a complex shipbuilding environment, utilizing a wide range of inspection techniques and leading NDT technology projects. The role requires a proactive individual capable of managing multiple tasks, mentoring junior staff, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives to uphold the highest standards of quality and safety.

Qualifications

  • PCN Level 2 certification in PT (DPI), RT Welds, and CR
  • Knowledge of operating and qualifying NDT technologies and inspection projects (desirable)
  • Experience with Computed Radiography, Digital Radiography, and Digitising Radiograph techniques (desirable)
  • FdSc in Non-Destructive Testing or B.Eng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering (desirable)
  • Strong understanding of NDT standards, procedures, and safety protocols
  • Excellent communication and coaching skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support NDT technology projects across various inspection methods
  • Conduct NDE inspections and audits independently and with teams to ensure compliance with project requirements
  • Support SSNA build strategy and design reviews, ensuring NDT methods are appropriately planned and achievable for current and future contracts
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to build NDT teams during inspection activities
  • Mentor and coach junior team members, articulating complex technical information clearly and effectively
  • Manage your own tasks efficiently, delivering results within set deadlines
  • Identify, escalate, and resolve technical issues related to NDT processes and equipment
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance NDT methodologies and quality standards
