A Quality Control Specialist job is available with the City of Fort Worth Water Utility, Centralized Water Laboratory. This is a full-time position that supports the laboratory’s mission of providing accurate, responsive and cost-effective analytical and technical services to all areas of the community.

The Quality Control Specialist coordinates and monitors the city's laboratory or cities contract laboratory quality assurance activities for water, wastewater, pretreatment and environmental testing. Ensures compliance with all regulatory aspects of the Quality Assurance plan; and monitors, investigates and evaluates water quality programs, processes, and concerns.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college with major course work in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • Three (3) years of experience in laboratory or quality control/quality assurance operations, including water, wastewater or industrial pretreatment procedures
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must be able to pass Drug Screen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) year of experience working with TNI or TCEQ accreditation requirements or ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory quality standards
  • One (1) year of experience with state and/or federal regulations relating to water quality, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act or the Clean Water Act
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and/or electronic quality management and data-management systems

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops, prepares and monitors the quality control and assurance plan for water, wastewater, pretreatment and environmental testing activities
  • Participates in internal and external audits, corrective actions, preventive actions, and studies regarding water, wastewater, and pretreatment quality assurance activities to ensure laboratory maintains compliance with regulatory requirements, which include Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) standards and The NELAC Institute (TNI) rules
  • Communicates effectively (both written and orally) with internal and external customers and maintain accurate and timely records
  • Interprets laboratory test results and sampling data; and maintains files of all monitoring activities and quality control documents
  • Develops and reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s); maintains inventory of logbooks, SOP’s and other controlled documents and oversees the archiving and destruction of laboratory documents in accordance with local, state and federal regulations
  • Investigates water quality problems in reservoirs, tributaries, treatment plants, distribution system and at customer city/industrial complexes; and assists users in resolving water quality and/or compliance issues
  • Estimates and projects needed funds regarding assigned quality control responsibilities; and coordinates and participates in procurement and calibration of monitoring devices and support equipment
  • Performs other related duties as required

Light Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work.
