Role Overview

The QC Team Leader is responsible for leading the QC Inspection Department. This involves close liaison with the QA department to ensure parts and products are checked to support customer requirements and to make sure specified quality requirements are maintained.

A key aspect of the role is the support for implementation and maintenance of in-process quality control methodologies including Process Capability studies, Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), and Statistical Process Control (SPC).

The role is also responsible for continuous improvement in the QC area, ensuring inspection processes are conducted in a Lean manner and to the company’s quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Daily management of the QC team.
  • Support and conduct daily inspection and other inspection activities as required.
  • Conduct MSA studies.
  • Raise resourcing concerns to the Lead Process Quality Engineer when relevant and make appropriate suggestions to resolve issues in line with internal processes, taking responsibility for the recruitment of personnel, ensuring best practice and Company policies are adhered to at all times.
  • Provide proactive support to the Quality Control team by identifying opportunities for process optimization, proposing actionable improvement initiatives, and driving their successful implementation to enhance overall product quality.
  • Coordinate the work of the team, setting targets, deadlines, and objectives for each team member, ensuring targets are met.
  • Ensure all team members are competent to undertake designated roles and monitor performance and where training is required, identify needs, and ensure that appropriate learning takes place.
  • Ensure adequate training is maintained to achieve a flexible workforce, able to cover absenteeism and changing business needs.
  • Undertake appraisals and performance reviews as and when required, highlighting training and development needs and ensuring these are met.
  • Authorisation of holidays and other types of absence, being mindful of Company policy, ensuring that adequate staffing levels are maintained.
  • Take responsibility for the full and comprehensive induction of all new personnel before they commence work, completing probationary reviews in accordance with Company policy.
  • Manage staff absence ensuring Return to Work interviews are conducted within 24 hours of staff return; raising concerns to line manager and/or HR Manager where appropriate.
  • Handle employee relationship issues in accordance with Company policy.
  • Maintain QC staff NDE qualifications in accordance with QA requirements SNT-TC-1A Level 2.
  • Maintain NDE staff qualifications in accordance with QA requirements PCN Level 2, General.
  • Support improvement projects and new product introductions from a QC perspective.
  • COSHH and Risk Assessment management.
  • Learn inspection measurement techniques as required and support if necessary.
  • Identification and justification of additional inspection equipment when necessary.
  • Perform other such duties commensurate with the nature and level of the post as may be reasonably required.

  • Demonstrable experience in a Team Leading role within a manufacturing organization.
  • Significant mechanical inspection experience or relevant apprenticeship.
  • Excellent experience of using hand tools and CMM measuring techniques.
  • Ability to manage own time and deliverables effectively.
  • Ability to train QC inspectors.
  • Ability to create programs on CMM machines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working alone and as an effective member of a multifunctional team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and thinking outside of the box.

Desirable Competencies

  • Knowledge and experience of ISO 9001 or AS9100.
  • Knowledge of MSA, Process Capability, and SPC.
  • Experience in working with problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, DMAIC, Ishikawa, 5Why’s, etc.
  • ISO 9001 Internal Auditor qualification and basic experience.
  • Mechanical Engineering background including measuring techniques.
  • Good general understanding of Health, Safety & Environmental Legislation.
