About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Quality Engineer specializing in Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) to join our dedicated quality assurance team at BAE Systems. Based onsite in Barrow-In-Furness, this role plays a pivotal part in supporting the construction and commissioning of the Dreadnought and Astute submarine programs. As a key member of our team, you will oversee NDT processes, ensuring that inspection techniques and quality standards are rigorously applied throughout the manufacturing lifecycle. You will lead NDT technology projects, support design reviews, and mentor junior staff, contributing to the delivery of world-class submarine capabilities for the Royal Navy. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex engineering projects within a collaborative environment that values innovation, safety, and excellence.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background in engineering or non-destructive testing, with relevant professional certifications and experience. Essential qualifications include:

  • PCN Level 2 certification in PT (DPI), RT welds, and CR.
  • Knowledge of NDT technology operation and inspection qualification projects.
  • Experience with computed radiography, digital radiography, and radiograph digitization is advantageous.
  • A formal qualification such as an FdSc in Non-Destructive Testing or a B.Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering will strengthen your application.

Additionally, strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a proactive approach to technical challenges are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support NDT technology projects across various methods, ensuring alignment with project requirements and standards.
  • Conduct NDE inspections and audits independently and as part of teams to verify compliance with specifications and quality standards.
  • Support SSNA build strategies and design reviews, ensuring NDT plans are appropriate, well-planned, and achievable for current and future contracts.
  • Provide technical guidance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution to build NDT teams, fostering continuous improvement and technical excellence.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members, articulating complex technical information in an understandable manner to promote skill development.
  • Monitor and report on inspection activities, escalating issues promptly to maintain project timelines and quality benchmarks.
  • Stay updated on advancements in NDT technologies and techniques, incorporating innovative solutions into project workflows.
