Purpose of the Role

The Quantity Surveyor will take ownership of the commercial and contractual management of construction projects, working closely with operational teams, clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers. The role requires an experienced and commercially capable QS who can independently manage project costs, protect commercial position and support the successful financial delivery of projects from tender through to final account.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Commercial Management

  • Manage project transactions, commitments and commercial records accurately and proactively.
  • Prepare and manage monthly valuations, applications for payment, cost reports, forecasts and cash flow information.
  • Undertake site and digital measurement, quantity take-offs and the commercial assessment of works.
  • Identify, value, negotiate and manage variations and change, ensuring commercial risks and opportunities are recognised early.
  • Prepare tender documentation, analyse returns and manage subcontractor and supplier procurement processes.

Contractual & Client Liaison

  • Manage contractual and commercial matters with clients, designers, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Attend and contribute to project, site and commercial meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build strong working relationships while ensuring financial and contractual matters are handled professionally and in the company’s commercial interests.

Commercial Control & Reporting

  • Produce accurate reports, schedules, cost-value information, forecasts and project performance data.
  • Maintain robust commercial records and ensure compliance with company procedures and contractual requirements.
  • Manage subcontract accounts, payment assessments, variations and final accounts, while supporting the resolution of commercial queries and disputes.

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong commercial awareness, numerical ability and attention to detail.
  • Experienced, organised and capable of working autonomously while collaborating effectively with operational and project teams.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Good Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, with familiarity with relevant QS/commercial software.
  • Strong problem-solving ability with the confidence to identify and manage commercial risk and opportunity.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or construction-related qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor with responsibility for valuations, cost reporting, variations, procurement, subcontract accounts and final accounts. Experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks, utilities or specialist contracting would be advantageous.

The role combines site-based measurement and operational engagement with cost control, change management, procurement, reporting and client/subcontractor liaison, providing an important commercial presence across the business.
