Quantity Surveyor – Structural Steel & Engineering
📍 Newport, South Wales
💼 Permanent | Full Time
💰 Competitive salary, depending on experience
A steel project can look straightforward on paper.
Then the drawings change. Materials move. Site requirements develop. Variations appear and suddenly the numbers behind the project matter just as much as the steel itself.
This is a role for a Quantity Surveyor who wants to be close to that process, managing the commercial side of specialist structural steel and engineering projects from the first cost plan through to final account.
The Role
You'll take responsibility for the commercial performance of allocated projects, keeping a close eye on budgets, expenditure, cash flow and contractual requirements.
- Prepare cost plans, project budgets, and cash-flow forecasts
- Monitor performance against those budgets and identify potential commercial risks before they become problems
- Manage variations, valuations, and commercial changes, supporting contract administration and ensuring the work being delivered is properly reflected in the commercial position
- Work closely with Project Managers, Estimators, Engineering, and Site teams
- Maintain relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers

The projects themselves are far from standard construction work, covering infrastructure, rail, aviation, architectural steelwork, and other specialist engineering projects.
What You'll Bring
- Strong experience within Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management
- Background in structural steel, steelwork, construction, or engineering
- Good understanding of construction or engineering contracts
- Experience managing project costs, budgets, and cash flow
- Commercial understanding of variations, valuations, and contractual matters
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Confident working with Project Managers and operational teams
- Good communication skills when dealing with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Ability to identify commercial risks and opportunities before they impact the project

Why This Role?
This isn't a conventional building QS position.
You'll be working on specialist steel engineering projects where the commercial decisions you make are directly connected to what is being designed, fabricated, and delivered.
The work spans sectors including rail, aviation, infrastructure, and architectural steel, giving you exposure to projects that are technically interesting and commercially varied.
You'll also have the opportunity to work closely with engineering and operational teams rather than sitting separately from the people delivering the projects.
