Driving Commercial Success Across Major Civil Engineering Projects
Bethell Construction is a leading civil engineering and utility services group with a proud heritage spanning over 150 years. As our project portfolio continues to grow, we are looking to recruit experienced Quantity Surveyors to join our Commercial team and support the successful delivery of highways, infrastructure, and civil engineering projects across Greater Manchester and the wider North West.
This is an excellent opportunity for commercially focused professionals to play a key role in maximising project value, maintaining profitability, and supporting strategic business objectives while working within a collaborative and forward-thinking environment.
The Role
As a Quantity Surveyor, you will provide commercial and contractual expertise throughout the entire project lifecycle, from pre-construction through to final account agreement.
Working closely with operational teams, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers, you will manage costs, procurement, valuations, forecasting, and contractual matters to ensure projects are delivered successfully and profitably.
You will also support the development of junior team members, helping to maintain high commercial standards and contribute to the continued success of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the commercial performance of civil engineering and infrastructure projects from tender stage through to final account.
- Prepare, monitor, and report project costs, forecasts, and cashflow.
- Procure and manage subcontract packages, ensuring best value and commercial compliance.
- Administer contracts and manage contractual obligations in line with company procedures.
- Work closely with operational teams to support project delivery and maximise commercial opportunities.
- Evaluate and manage variations, compensation events, and change control processes.
- Develop and maintain strong client, supplier, and subcontractor relationships.
- Prepare accurate valuations, applications for payment, and final account submissions.
- Identify, manage, and mitigate commercial risks across projects.
- Support procurement strategies and supply chain management activities.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to Assistant Quantity Surveyors and Trainee Quantity Surveyors.
- Ensure compliance with commercial reporting requirements and company governance procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and commercial best practice across the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
