Quantity Surveyor – Civils
Location: Birchwood, Warrington – minimum three days per week in the office, with travel to project sites as required
Salary: Up to £60,000 per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full-time
Reports to: Civils Director
An established and growing civil engineering contractor is looking to appoint an ambitious Quantity Surveyor to join its Civils Division.
The client is looking for someone who can initially join the business as a Quantity Surveyor, take ownership of the commercial delivery of civils projects and develop alongside the division. The long-term aim is for the successful candidate to progress into a Commercial Manager position and potentially become a Commercial Director as the business continues to grow.
This would suit a commercially capable Quantity Surveyor who already has solid civil engineering or infrastructure experience but is still ambitious, adaptable and keen to take the next major step in their career.
The role
You will provide quantity surveying and commercial support across a portfolio of civil engineering projects, working closely with project managers, engineers, clients and subcontractors.
You will manage projects from tender handover and contract negotiation through to final account settlement, with increasing responsibility and autonomy as you develop within the business.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the commercial and contractual aspects of civil engineering projects.
- Prepare and monitor project budgets, forecasts, costs and profitability.
- Produce monthly cost value reconciliations, cash-flow forecasts and commercial reports.
- Assess, prepare, price and negotiate variations, compensation events, claims and additional works.
- Manage subcontractor procurement, payments, variations and final accounts.
- Prepare and submit client applications for payment.
- Maintain accurate cost records and valuations of completed works.
- Identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide commercial advice to project managers, engineers and operational teams.
- Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with contractual requirements.
- Support contract negotiations and the resolution of commercial disputes.
- Develop strong relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders.
- Support junior members of the commercial team as the division expands.
- Contribute to the continued development and commercial growth of the Civils Division.

About you
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- At least five years’ experience in a Quantity Surveying position within civil engineering or infrastructure.
- Experience working with Tier 1 contractors or delivering packages on major infrastructure projects.
- A strong working knowledge of NEC, JCT and other standard construction contracts.
- Experience independently pricing and negotiating variations and commercial change.
- Strong commercial awareness, negotiation and analytical skills.
- Experience managing subcontractor procurement, payments and final accounts.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and commercial management systems.
- A full UK driving licence.
- An ambitious and proactive approach to career development.
- The desire and potential to progress into a Commercial Manager and, longer term, Commercial Director position.

Career progression
This is not intended to be a static Quantity Surveyor position. The client wants to appoint someone who can grow with the business, gradually take greater ownership of the commercial function and work towards becoming the division’s future Commercial Manager or Commercial Director.
The successful candidate will receive exposure to senior leadership, significant commercial responsibility and the opportunity to help shape the processes and structure of a growing civils business.
