About the Opportunity

An established specialist advisory practice is seeking experienced professionals to join its Commercial Disputes and Project Advisory team. The successful candidate will support clients across complex construction and infrastructure projects, providing strategic commercial, contractual, and dispute-related services throughout the project lifecycle.

This role offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of assignments ranging from proactive project support and commercial management through to the assessment and resolution of high-value contractual disputes.

This role will suit an experienced quantity surveyor / commercial manager from a construction background. Please apply if you have this experience and an interest in law!

Position Overview

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering commercial and contractual advice to clients operating across construction, engineering, infrastructure, energy, and development sectors. Responsibilities will include analysing project records, assessing contractual entitlements, preparing dispute documentation, supporting negotiations, and contributing to formal dispute resolution processes.

The role requires a commercially minded professional who can operate independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial & Contractual Advisory

  • Provide strategic commercial guidance on live projects.
  • Review contract documentation and advise on contractual obligations, rights, and risks.
  • Support clients with change management, valuation, payment mechanisms, and contract compliance.
  • Assist project teams in resolving commercial issues before escalation into formal disputes.
  • Deliver practical recommendations to mitigate commercial exposure and improve project outcomes.

Claims & Dispute Support

  • Evaluate project records to identify causes of commercial loss and contractual entitlement.
  • Prepare detailed claims relating to variations, disruption, prolongation, breach of contract, and associated financial impacts.
  • Develop robust evidential submissions to support negotiation and dispute proceedings.
  • Assist with the preparation of documentation for mediation, adjudication, arbitration, and litigation.
  • Review and critique opposing party submissions and supporting evidence.

Financial Analysis

  • Examine project costs, payment records, and financial documentation.
  • Quantify commercial impacts arising from project events and contractual issues.
  • Assess loss and expense claims and evaluate damages where appropriate.
  • Produce clear, evidence-based financial assessments and reports.

Reporting & Client Engagement

  • Draft high-quality technical and commercial reports.
  • Present findings and recommendations to clients, legal teams, and project stakeholders.
  • Participate in client meetings, workshops, and dispute resolution forums.
  • Build and maintain strong professional relationships with clients and industry partners.

Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Manage multiple assignments simultaneously while maintaining quality and deadlines.
  • Support and mentor junior team members.
  • Contribute to business development initiatives and client growth opportunities.
  • Assist in developing internal best practice methodologies and knowledge resources.

Essential Experience

  • 5+ years Quantity Surveying experience (contractor, consultancy, or client-side)
  • Good exposure to NEC and/or JCT contracts (both is ideal, but one strong and one working knowledge is often enough)
  • Experience with:
    • Final accounts
    • Variations
    • Loss & expense
    • Commercial management of projects
    • Contract administration
    • Client-facing commercial experience

Nice to Have (but not essential)

  • Adjudication experience
  • Claims preparation/defence
  • Delay and disruption assessment
  • Construction law qualification
  • Expert witness exposure
  • Previous dispute resolution experience

Qualifications

Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Commercial Management, Engineering, construction law, or a related discipline.

Desirable Experience & Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Construction Law, Commercial Management, Dispute Resolution, or a related field.
  • Membership of a recognised professional institution.
  • Experience supporting formal dispute resolution proceedings.
  • Familiarity with expert witness processes and evidential analysis.
  • Experience within major infrastructure, energy, transportation, or complex construction projects.
