About The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced RPA and operational RP practitioner to become part of a multi-disciplined team of Engineers, Designers, and Safety Case authors. The team is all working together to design a new facility. Your role will require regular interaction with design teams, subcontractors, and process engineers, providing advice on Radiological Protection and Operational Health Physics requirements that the design must accommodate to function effectively. The design must meet and where possible exceed regulatory requirements, it will accommodate Best Industry Practice, and utilize Best Available Techniques to produce a design that can meet future production requirements with an operational risk to workers and the environment that is demonstrably ALARP.

Opportunities will exist to challenge historical practices, introducing efficiencies and technically underpinned design improvements that further reduce radiological risk. The flexible structure of the project will allow a successful candidate to influence strategic decisions at both the project and client level through ongoing interactions with both appointed RPAs and the Client RPA body.

If you are a Professionally certified RP practitioner with a wide range of nuclear industry experience and a good knowledge of design and new build processes and practices, this is an opportunity for you to make a significant impact to a complex facility design. Your day-to-day work and responsibilities will require you to manage your own time and priorities in a way which best serves the project and the client.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • An Honours degree in a Science or Engineering discipline (or equivalent)
  • Significant experience as an RPA operating within the UK nuclear industry
  • A current or pending RPA 2000 certification
  • An SRP membership and ideally a CRadP Certification
  • Experience in SC production/ techniques is highly desirable
  • Operational HP experience is highly desirable.

A successful candidate must possess an SC clearance and be willing and capable of gaining a DV clearance. They will possess excellent communication skills and have a good working knowledge of relevant regulations and guidance such as IRR17 and its ACoP, EPR16, ONR SAPs, and their Technical Assessment Guides (TAG). They will have a good understanding of nucleonic instrumentation and their functional capabilities and be able to calculate Derived Working Levels (DWL) and Derived Air Concentrations (DAC) from first principles. They will need this knowledge and experience to run and support various working groups to develop the radiological Design Basis for chosen instrument operations and measurements in support of the facilities Active Commissioning.
