The Opportunity
Amentum is looking for a Radiation Protection Consultant to join our Radiation Protection & Characterisation team.
This is a consultancy role supporting a diverse portfolio of clients across industrial, research, healthcare, and other sectors using ionising radiation. You will work closely with experienced Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs), providing practical radiation protection support to clients while developing your own technical competence and experience.
The role will involve regular client interaction, site visits, radiation protection audits, preparation of technical documentation, and delivery of radiation protection training.
We are looking for someone with practical radiation protection experience who is capable of developing strong client relationships and wants to progress towards certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser through RPA2000.
Your Role
As a Radiation Protection Consultant, you will:
- Support the delivery of radiation protection services to a diverse portfolio of clients.
- Undertake radiation protection audits, inspections, and site visits under appropriate RPA oversight.
- Identify areas of non-compliance, good practice, and opportunities for improvement and produce clear recommendations for clients.
- Support clients in the development and review of radiation risk assessments, Local Rules, procedures, and contingency arrangements.
- Provide practical radiation protection support on matters including designated areas, engineering controls, monitoring arrangements, and safe systems of work.
- Produce clear and technically robust reports following audits, assessments, and client visits.
- Develop and deliver radiation protection awareness and other radiation protection training to clients and colleagues.
- Build effective working relationships with clients and act as a day-to-day point of contact for routine radiation protection matters.
- Work closely with certificated RPAs, escalating matters requiring formal RPA advice or specialist technical input as appropriate.
- Support radiation monitoring activities and the selection and use of appropriate radiation monitoring instrumentation.
- Maintain accurate technical and project records.
- Support the delivery and management of recurring client requirements, including audits, training, and other scheduled radiation protection activities.
- Contribute to tender and proposal activities and identify opportunities where Amentum can provide additional support to existing clients.
- Work towards RPA2000 certification, developing and maintaining the knowledge, experience, and evidence required to demonstrate competence as an RPA.
- Maintain and develop your technical and professional competence through appropriate continuing professional development.

About You
To be considered for this role, you will have practical experience in radiation protection, health physics, or a closely related discipline.
You will also have:
- A relevant degree or equivalent technical qualification in a scientific, engineering, or radiation protection discipline.
- A good working knowledge of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and associated guidance.
- An understanding of the practical application of radiation protection principles.
- Experience working with radiation risk assessments, Local Rules, or other radiation protection documentation.
- Strong technical report writing skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage directly with clients and stakeholders.
- The ability to explain technical and regulatory requirements clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- The ability to work independently within defined areas of competence while recognising when advice or escalation to a certificated RPA is required.
- Good organisation and time-management skills, with the ability to work independently, manage multiple client requirements, and deliver work to agreed timescales.
- A willingness to travel regularly to client sites across the UK.
- Eligibility to work in the UK and the ability to achieve the appropriate level of security clearance for our projects.
A full UK driving licence is required due to the client-facing and site-based nature of the role.
Professional Development
You do not need to hold an RPA2000 Certificate of Competence when joining us.
However, we are looking for someone who intends to develop towards certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser.
You will work alongside experienced and certificated RPAs, gaining practical experience across a varied client portfolio and developing the evidence and competence required to support progression towards RPA2000 certification.

Desirable Experience
Experience in one or more of the following would be beneficial:
- Undertaking radiation protection audits or compliance assessments.
- Working directly with organisations using ionising radiation.
- Developing or reviewing Local Rules and radiation risk assessments.
- Delivering radiation protection or radiation awareness training.
- Radiation monitoring and instrumentation.
- Sealed and unsealed radioactive sources.
- X-ray generators and other radiation-generating equipment.
- Radioactive waste management.
- Environmental permitting and radioactive substances regulation.
- Radioactive materials transport and Class 7 requirements.
- Working with Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs) and other client personnel responsible for local radiation protection arrangements.
- Supporting multiple clients within a consultancy environment.
- Working towards RPA2000 certification or maintaining an RPA2000 portfolio.
What We Are Looking For
Technical knowledge is important, but this role is equally about working effectively with clients.
You will be comfortable visiting client sites, speaking with operators and managers, delivering training, and translating radiation protection legislation and technical requirements into practical advice that clients can understand and implement.
You will be expected to take increasing ownership of client activities as your experience and competence develop, while working within Amentum's established radiation protection arrangements and seeking support from certificated RPAs where required.
This is an opportunity to develop within an established radiation protection capability, gain experience across a varied client portfolio, and build towards becoming a certificated Radiation Protection Adviser.
