Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Radiation Protection Manager to provide technical leadership and oversight of radiation safety activities across our UK business.
The Role
As the Radiation Protection Manager, you will be the company's principal authority on radiation protection, responsible for ensuring the safe, secure and compliant use, storage and transportation of radioactive materials throughout Applus UK.
Working closely with operational teams, senior management, regulatory bodies and appointed specialists, you will lead the development and continual improvement of our radiation protection arrangements, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation and industry best practice while maintaining ALARP principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the subject matter expert for all radiation protection matters across Applus UK.
- Lead and maintain the Radiation Safety Management System and company-wide Radiation Protection Programme.
- Ensure compliance with IRR17, Environmental Permitting Regulations, Dangerous Goods legislation and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with regulatory authorities including HSE, ONR, EA and SEPA.
- Oversee radioactive source security, storage, transport, tracking and accountancy arrangements.
- Manage radiation safety audits, inspections and assurance activities across multiple sites.
- Lead investigations into radiation safety incidents, near misses and non-compliances.
- Develop and deliver radiation protection and regulatory compliance training.
- Provide technical support to operational, commercial and project teams.
- Promote a positive safety culture through leadership, coaching and continuous improvement.

About You
We are looking for an experienced radiation protection professional with strong technical knowledge and practical experience in industrial radiography and radioactive source management.
Essential Requirements
- Current Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) qualification and significant experience within a radiation protection leadership role, or a degree in Health Physics or Radiation Dose Monitoring.
- Extensive industrial radiography experience.
- Strong knowledge of radioactive material transportation requirements by road, sea and air.
- Excellent understanding of:
- Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17)
- Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations (CDG)
- Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR)
- Radiation protection principles and regulatory compliance
- Experience within industries such as nuclear, energy, testing and inspection, oil & gas, utilities or manufacturing.
- Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable
- RPA2000 certification or working towards Radiation Protection Adviser status.
- Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) qualification.
- ADR Class 7 certification.
- Internal Auditor qualification.
- Experience working directly with HSE, ONR, EA or SEPA.
- Professional membership with SRP, IRPA or a related organisation.
