I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We host two 3T magnetic resonance (MR) scanners, one positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance scanner (PETMR), one total-body and one clinical computed tomography (PETCT) scanners, and a photon-counting CT (PCCT) scanner alongside an advanced radiochemistry facility. The latter includes a cyclotron with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) licensed production facilities, and research and development laboratories. We have extensive image analysis facilities plus growing activity in retinal and optical imaging. All activity is underpinned by an integrated data management platform. This represents circa £40M capital investment in imaging equipment over the last 10 years, and an annual turnover of nearly £4M.
Edinburgh Imaging depends upon a large and specialized workforce, who are the foundation of all we do. We are a diverse group of experts drawn from many disciplines: physicists, radiographers, radiochemists, data managers, programmers, business developers, technical experts, technicians, governance staff, marketing and administration. Many roles depend on advanced academic expertise and we both lead delivery of academic outputs ourselves, and provide guidance and support for non-imagers using imaging in their academic work.
Edinburgh Imaging sits within the Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research. Established on 1 August 2025, the Institute is hosted by the School of Neurological and Cardiovascular Sciences, one of six schools in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. The School is home to research and postgraduate training in neuroscience, cardiovascular, metabolic and psychiatric research.
