What Will You Do?
Role
Just like a civilian fulfilling the same role, you will normally work under the clinical direction of a radiologist and produce images. In your role you will:
- Use a range of technical imaging equipment
- Liaise with a wide range of healthcare professionals and clinicians
- Function in a variety of departments including the Emergency Department, ITU, Operating Theatres, In Patients, Out Patients and Portable Imaging onwards
Requirements & Eligibility
Qualified Applicants: State-registered radiographer with BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography, registered with the HCPC as a Diagnostic Radiographer.
Unqualified Applicants: 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or five Scottish National 5s at Grade C to include Maths/Application of Mathematics and English Language/Literature and Science plus A-levels. Please see full details below.
Be aged 17 – 47 years old (Must attest before 48th birthday)
You will need to meet specific Nationality and Residency criteria.
Commit to minimum 12 years service
Meet the health and fitness criteria and pass a Fitness test

Education Requirements
Qualified Applicants: State-registered radiographer with BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography, registered with the HCPC as a Diagnostic Radiographer.
Unqualified Applicants: 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or five Scottish National 5s at Grade C to include Maths/Application of Mathematics and English Language/Literature and Science.
Grade BBB in three A-level subjects including Science. A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking and Citizenship Studies are not accepted but other qualifications may be considered.

Phase One Training Basic Recruit Training - 10 weeks at RAF Halton, Buckinghamshire.
Phase Two Training Specialist training - Ongoing, as assigned. On completion of BRTC at RAF Halton you will commence undergraduate professional training as a Radiographer.
First Tour Specialist training - Ongoing, as assigned. Your first posting will be to RCDM Birmingham or RCDM Oxford, where you will gain confidence and experience.
Ongoing Training Ongoing development - As assigned. As a Radiographer, you will need to maintain your registration with the HCPC.
Career Prospects Ongoing development - As assigned. You will initially join the RAF for a period of twelve years on a Notice Engagement.
Transferable Skills Ongoing training - As assigned. The skills and qualifications you can gain are as valuable in the civilian world as they are in the RAF.

Training
What Happens After Applying
Joining the RAF takes several steps. Below is an overview of the process. The purpose of this process is for us to gauge whether you’re the right person for the RAF and for you to show us all of your skills and experiences that have made you who you are.
Selection Interviews Stage 1 of 6. You’ll get to showcase your skills and experience, and we’ll answer any questions you have about joining us. Your interview will take place at a local AFCO and cover topics such as family life, education, work experience, special interests and hobbies, interest in the RAF, training, the role you’ve applied for, and the RAF. Some roles require a second interview and/or test to determine your suitability.
Health Assessment Stage 2 of 6. You must pass an occupational health assessment to show you’re fit for military duty. This includes checks on hearing, eyesight, body mass index, and screening for health issues that may prevent you from carrying out your role.
Fitness Test Stage 3 of 6. You’ll need to complete a Pre-Joining Fitness Test (PJFC), a 2.4km run at a local gym. Performance levels differ by age and gender, and training plans are available to assist preparation.
Specialist Interview Stage 4 of 6. Candidates for this role will attend a specialist interview.
Acceptance Stage 5 of 6. After successfully completing each phase, you’ll be invited to a provisional offer of service interview at your nearest AFCO to ensure you understand the terms and conditions of service and are prepared to commence training.
Training Stage 6 of 6. Basic Recruit Training takes place over 10 weeks at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. It prepares you mentally and physically for your career with the RAF through six phases: Arrival, General Service training, Initial Force Protection training, Exercise Blue Warrior, Force development training, and Graduation.
Once fully trained, you will receive role-specific training to prepare you for your duties as a Radiographer.
