This is a unique opportunity to join Hunterston A during one of the busiest and most significant phases of its decommissioning programme. Working within the radiological protection team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring radiological safety and regulatory compliance across a diverse range of activities.
You will work closely with colleagues, regulators, and specialist contractors, building trusted relationships and providing expert advice that supports safe, effective delivery. The role offers the chance to influence decision-making, drive continuous improvement, and contribute to high standards of performance across the organisation.

What Will You Be Doing
In this role, you will provide expert radiological protection advice across the site, supporting operational teams, projects, and decommissioning programmes. You'll ensure compliance with regulatory requirements while helping to develop practical, proportionate solutions that enable work to be delivered safely and efficiently. Your responsibilities will include:
- Undertaking radiological risk assessments
- Developing ALARP strategies
- Preparing compliance documentation
- Advising on the management of radiological risks

- Review work instructions and safety documentation
- Provide specialist advice on radiological controls, PPE, monitoring, and waste management
- Contribute to the safe delivery of complex decommissioning activities
This role offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution beyond day-to-day technical support. You will influence decision-making, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and help shape the future of radiological protection at Hunterston A. As a member of the team, you will support the development of junior Radiological Protection Engineers, strengthen organisational capability, and contribute to contingency arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist radiological advice, producing and reviewing risk assessments, dose estimates, ALARP assessments, technical reports, and radiological work documentation.
- Influence engineering design and operational activities through BPM/ALARP studies and the development of effective radiological protection arrangements.
- Develop, implement, and assure radiological protection practices, including inspections, audits, surveys, work instructions, PPE and respiratory protection requirements, and the introduction of new equipment.
- Work collaboratively with project teams, contractors, inspectors, and regulators, monitoring performance and driving improvements in radiological safety.
Who Are We Looking For
To succeed in this role, you’ll bring a strong foundation in radiological protection and compliance. Your expertise should include a detailed understanding of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, ensuring you can provide authoritative advice on compliance and best practice.
We’re looking for someone who combines technical knowledge with practical experience. You’ll have worked in specialist roles and ideally within a nuclear site environment, applying your skills to complex challenges.

Radiation Protection Adviser status and/or Qualified Expert status together with experience of consigning Class 7 Dangerous Goods would be a strong advantage. This is a role where your insight and leadership will make a tangible difference on a site at the forefront of NRS’s mission.

All successful candidates will need to provide proof of identity, eligibility to work in the UK, and employment/education history (typically covering the last 3–5 years) in line with NRS Baseline Security requirements.
