About the role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Rail Tendering Engineer to join our growing team at our Rail Centre of Excellence in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
This is not a typical desk-based tendering role! You'll be at the heart of our business, working closely with customers, engineering teams and operational leaders to develop repair, overhaul and maintenance solutions that keep critical rail assets moving. From the first customer enquiry through to project handover, you'll play a key role in winning work, building relationships and ensuring successful delivery into the workshop.
Whether you're currently a rail engineer looking to take the next step into a broader commercial and operational role, or an experienced tendering, proposals or technical professional seeking a fresh challenge, this position offers a unique opportunity to influence both business growth and operational success. With significant investment, ambitious plans and exciting developments on the horizon, there has never been a better time to join us as we continue to strengthen our position as one of the UK's leading rail service providers.
About the Rail Centre of Excellence
Based in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, our Rail Centre of Excellence is a key part of Sulzer's UK rail business, delivering specialist repair, overhaul, refurbishment and life-extension solutions for rolling stock operators, maintainers and OEMs across the UK. Backed by the strength, engineering heritage and global reach of the wider Sulzer Group, our RISAS-accredited facility combines decades of rail expertise with world-class electrical and mechanical engineering capability. From traction motors, wheelsets and bogie frames to HVAC systems, braking equipment, auxiliary power systems and reverse-engineered components, we help customers extend asset life, improve reliability and keep fleets moving safely and efficiently.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
