Railway Safety and Security Officer

Carlisle Support Services is looking for enthusiastic, reliable and dedicated people to join our team as a Railway Safety and Security Officer, working with our prestigious rail client. If you're willing to learn new skills and build a career in security, we'll give you the full training and support to help you succeed — no previous railway experience required.

The role
Your core responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring colleague and passenger safety, providing reassurance to everyone around you
- Providing a smart, visible, proactive and engaging security presence and deterrent
- Managing conflict effectively, staying calm and in control of incidents
- Controlling access and egress, and conducting security patrols to deter crime
- Engaging proactively and professionally with members of the public
- Staying alert to hazards and incidents, and responding appropriately
- Acting as a first point of contact – providing guidance, information and directions to customers
- Following safety and security processes and procedures
- Working as part of a team, building strong working relationships

Skills You'll Build And Use
- Safeguarding awareness
- Understanding of Railway Byelaws
- Suicide prevention awareness
- Patrolling the railway network, onboard services and at stations
- Customer service and engaging with members of the public
- Liaising with British Transport Police
- Managing anti-social behaviour (ASB)
- Supporting vulnerable persons
- Railway safety awareness
- Radio communications
- Security searches and counter-terrorism awareness
- Conflict management
Is this you?
- SIA Guarding or Door Supervision licence
- 5 years' checkable work and address history
- Reliable, punctual, flexible and smart in appearance
- Friendly, approachable and always professional
- Enthusiastic and motivated to do a great job
- Ideally some experience in a security or customer-facing environment, and comfortable working as part of a team
- Effective people skills, with the ability to interact positively with clients and customers
- Full UK driving licence with no points – essential
- Keen to be part of a growing, multi-skilled team, with opportunities to develop further across the network
Whatever your background – ex-military, ex-police, a carer, a former railway operator, in revenue protection, or simply skilled in the areas above – if you've got what it takes, we want to hear from you.
Vetting and accreditation
Successful applicants will be required to undergo vetting as part of the Railway Safety Accreditation Scheme (RSAS), administered by the British Transport Police, which accredits individuals working in railway safety and security roles. This includes identity verification, employment and address history checks, and a review of relevant criminal records, to ensure the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and public trust. This check requires a minimum of 3 years UK Residency.
