Purpose
The R&D Business Partner is responsible for providing financial oversight and analysis across R&D, Product and IT functions. This role delivers visibility into R&D investment, technology spending, and AI adoption, connecting engineering and infrastructure costs to delivery outcomes.
The R&D Business Partner works with R&D, Product and IT leadership to build product-level profitability analysis, support investment decision-making, and maintain governance frameworks for material spend.
This role utilises financial data and operational metrics to produce reporting and analysis that informs leadership decision-making on investment allocation and programme performance.
Key Responsibilities
R&D Delivery and Investment Tracking
- Track R&D delivery performance against roadmap and investment case.
- Develop investment case templates for new R&D and infrastructure expenditure.
- Conduct post-investment reviews documenting programme outcomes versus approved investment cases.

Product P&L Ownership
- Build and maintain product-level P&Ls covering revenue, cost and contribution analysis.
- Provide Product and R&D leadership with visibility into product unit economics.
AI and Technology Economics
- Quantify ROI on AI initiatives, including cost, adoption and value metrics.
- Develop business cases for AI and technology investments with tracking of realised value.
- Maintain current understanding of AI and technology cost economics.
Infrastructure Spend and Capacity Analysis
- Analyse hosting spend and capacity allocation across R&D programmes.
- Maintain and update infrastructure cost models.
- Monitor and report on cost performance against approved forecasts.
Business Partnering and Governance
- Support R&D, Product and IT leadership with financial analysis and business case development.
- Establish and maintain governance frameworks for R&D investment approval.
- Build reporting routines and dashboards to provide leadership with timely visibility of spend and performance.
Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- 4+ years in FP&A, R&D finance, technology finance, product finance or business partnering roles in SaaS or technology organisations.
- Demonstrated experience in business partnering with technical or product stakeholders.
- Advanced financial modelling skills including P&L development, cost allocation and scenario analysis.
- Ability to work with engineering, product and infrastructure data and challenge technical stakeholder assumptions.
- Knowledge of AI and technology economics and ability to translate this into investment frameworks.
- Attention to detail in financial analysis and reporting.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.

Desirable
- Experience with business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Tableau or Looker.
- SQL or Python experience for data manipulation.
- Experience with Agile delivery or product management tools including Jira.
- Degree in finance, economics, mathematics, computer science or equivalent professional experience.
