R&D Manager - Software
We are seeking an R&D Manager - Software to lead the team developing Quantinuum's programming-language and compiler tools, including Guppy, HUGR, and TKET. These tools form a core part of our quantum software stack, enabling developers and internal teams to translate high-level quantum programs into robust, executable systems.
This role combines technical leadership and people management in roughly equal parts. Working with software leadership and senior engineers, you will define and execute the technical roadmap, guide architectural decisions, and ensure that our language and compiler ecosystem is scalable, maintainable, and ready for production use. You will remain technically engaged through design, code review, problem-solving, and implementation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of software engineers, setting clear expectations and supporting career development at every level.
- Define and deliver the team's roadmap jointly with software leadership and senior individual contributors, allocating capacity, tracking progress, and managing priorities, risks, dependencies, and cross-team handoffs.
- Provide technical leadership across the language, compiler, and developer-tooling stack.
- Guide software through the full development lifecycle, from research and prototyping to tested, documented, and production-ready releases.
- Partner with research, applications, product, hardware, and other software teams in the UK and US to align interfaces and ensure the software stack supports Quantinuum's quantum processors and priority use cases, with occasional travel to Quantinuum's US sites.
- Recruit, onboard, and retain excellent engineers, and continuously improve the team's engineering and delivery practices.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
