What does a career in R&D Tax actually involve?

R&D Tax is about helping businesses identify and claim the tax reliefs available for qualifying research and development activities, while understanding the innovation happening across a wide range of industries. You’ll work with a variety of organisations, from innovative start-ups and growing businesses to larger companies and international groups, building relationships with clients and developing an understanding of the projects, technologies, and challenges behind their work. From an early stage, you’ll support work such as speaking with clients to understand their R&D activities, researching technical and tax guidance, preparing R&D tax relief claims, and helping ensure claims are accurate and meet the relevant requirements. As your experience develops, you’ll gain exposure to more complex projects and advisory work, helping clients understand how R&D incentives can support their investment in innovation. It’s a career that combines technical knowledge with commercial awareness, analytical thinking, problem solving, and working with people. If you’re interested in technology, innovation, how businesses develop new products and processes, and how tax can support that investment, R&D Tax could be a great fit for you.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
