Role summary
We are seeking a R&D Laboratory Technician to support the development, testing, and quality assurance of our optical medical devices. This is an entry-level position suited to someone with a scientific or engineering background looking to build a career in the medical device industry. Working under supervision, the technician will carry out laboratory testing, maintain equipment and records, and support the wider R&D and quality teams in a regulated environment.
Key responsibilities
- Assisting with the assembly of prototype devices
- Perform testing and data collection on prototype devices
- Working closely with engineers and manufacturing technicians to develop innovative solutions to design, manufacture and assembly process problems
- Inspecting the quality of components at goods-in
- Maintaining and organising lab equipment
- Machining prototype parts using a 5-axis CNC mill and developing CAM toolpaths
- Growing prototype parts using 3D printers (FDM and SLA)
- Updating lab registers, databases and documents (e.g. equipment requiring calibration, stock inventory and risk assessments)
- Proactive restocking of inventory and consumables to support fast-paced development
- Development of lab growth/innovation proposals to enhance Occuity’s capabilities and speed

Essential skills and experience
- Appreciation and desire to work across the full medical product lifecycle - from concept to design to manufacture to post-launch sustaining
- Experience interpreting 2D engineering drawings with GD&T
- Experience of using rapid prototyping techniques to quickly test concepts
- Appreciation of working within a quality and regulatory framework, preferably medical
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team to tight deadlines
- Capable of being flexible and resilient in a fast-paced start-up environment
Desirable
- Experience managing an R&D laboratory
- Experience working responsibly with AI tools with effective results
- Experience using 3D CAD tools (preferably Onshape)
- Experience working with precise medical opto-electro-mechanical products
- Experience of agile project management tools (preferably Jira)
- Experience working in an early-stage start-up
