Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Real Time Systems Development Engineer to join our Simulator Development Team within the Simulation and Vehicle Modelling Group, in close collaboration with the Control Systems Group. You’ll play a key part in the development and evolution of real time and HIL systems, such as our Gearbox Dyno and DIL Simulator. This is a highly collaborative role combining technical expertise with real-world performance impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the ongoing development of the team’s Gearbox dyno and DIL simulator.
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain power unit, driveline, hydraulics, and vehicle models for real-time use.
  • Apply correlation techniques to identify and resolve issues.
  • Work on real-time and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation solutions.
  • Develop and improve simulation and controls solutions to enhance the HIL’s fidelity.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of tools for setup, diagnostics, data display, simulation, and analysis.
  • Collaborate proactively across departments, contributing effectively to technical reviews.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant technologies, and industry best practice.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Strong problem-solving, mathematical, and analytical skills.
  • Solid expertise in real-time systems, mechatronics, HIL simulators, and controls.
  • Modelling experience across mechanical, hydraulic, thermal, and electrical systems, including correlation techniques.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly, concisely, and professionally, often to tight deadlines.
  • Calm, confident approach under pressure with a strong results-driven mindset.
  • Ideally, experience in automotive or within high-level motorsport in a similar role.
  • Experience with ECUs, electric motors actuation, servo drives, and hydraulic actuation and real-time OS would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Coding experience in MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, and other languages such as Python or C#.
  • Experience with tools such as DSPACE, DYMOLA, AVL-PUMA, System Monitor/TAG SECU, ATLAS, Jira, Git, or Bitbucket.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as EtherCAT and CAN would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • General understanding of numerical methods, optimisation, control theory, vehicle dynamics, and performance simulation.
