Our Story

Gear4music is one of the UK’s leading retailers of musical instruments and equipment, supporting musicians and music lovers around the world. From our headquarters in York, our teams work together to provide an excellent experience for our customers, whether they’re buying their first instrument, upgrading their studio, or simply looking for some expert advice. We’re now looking for a friendly, professional and confident Receptionist / Customer Service Advisor to join our team and be the welcoming face of Gear4music at our Head Office.

Your Role in the Show

As our Receptionist / Customer Service Advisor, you’ll be the first point of contact for visitors arriving at our Head Office, so creating a warm, professional and positive first impression will be a key part of your role. You’ll manage our reception area, welcome visitors and colleagues, and make sure everyone arriving at the building is greeted and directed appropriately. Alongside your reception responsibilities, you’ll also support our Customer Service team, responding to customer enquiries and helping with general administrative duties.

Your day could include:

  • Being the face of our Head Office – providing a friendly, professional welcome to visitors, candidates, suppliers and colleagues.
  • Managing reception – ensuring the reception area remains organised, welcoming and presentable throughout the day.
  • Directing visitors – contacting the appropriate person or department and ensuring visitors know where they need to go.
  • Customer support – responding to customer emails and providing clear, friendly and professional assistance.
  • Handling enquiries – resolving straightforward queries and making sure more complex issues reach the right person.
  • Administrative support – helping with general office and Customer Service administration.
  • Working as part of the team – supporting colleagues and helping us deliver a consistently positive experience for both customers and visitors.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What We’re Looking For

Reception is often someone's first experience of Gear4music, so we’re looking for someone who understands the importance of making a great first impression. You’ll be naturally welcoming and approachable, but equally comfortable maintaining a professional front-of-house environment. A smart, professional and well-presented approach appropriate to a customer-facing reception role is essential.

You’ll also need to be confident communicating with a wide range of people, whether you're welcoming someone to the office in person, speaking with colleagues or helping a customer.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A friendly, confident and professional manner.
  • A naturally welcoming and customer-focused approach.
  • Strong organisational skills and good attention to detail.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and general computer systems.
  • The ability to remain professional and composed in a busy environment.
  • Previous experience in reception, front-of-house, hospitality or customer service – desirable but not essential.
  • An interest in musical instruments, music technology or audio-visual equipment – a great advantage, but not essential.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who will take pride in representing Gear4music and creating a fantastic first impression for everyone who walks through our doors. If you don't meet every desirable requirement but think you have the personality, professionalism and customer-focused approach we're looking for, we'd still love to hear from you.
