Commercial Director
Our client, an ambitious SME recruitment agency, wants a Commercial Director to own growth alongside the CEO, with a clear path to the C-suite.
Our client is an established recruitment business. Right now, two senior leaders originate 68% of the jobs it brings in and 79% of its placements. It's creating a new senior role to change that.
As Commercial Director, you'll build a second origination engine. You'll raise the quality of the work the business takes on and grow more from its best clients. You'll report into senior leadership and work with the CEO on the commercial strategy to December 2027, including groundwork for new markets in 2027–28.
What you'll do
- Own the job pipeline: decide which roles the business accepts and how hard each is worked, based on fill probability and fee value
- Originate business yourself, and coach desk heads and senior consultants to win their own
- Run key-account plans for the top 10–15 clients: open new divisions and geographies, move to retained or exclusive terms, and say no to low-value work
- Lead the commercial rhythm: weekly pipeline and grade-mix reviews, quarterly account reviews and a reliable forecast
- Hold the standard fee and grow retained and project-style engagements

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

How success is measured
- +30% A-grade jobs taken on, year on year
- Under 50% of jobs originated by the two current lead originators (from 68% today)
- More placements and fees from the top 10–15 clients, with fewer clients overall
Who you are
- A proven originator with a track record of growing key accounts: more roles, more divisions, better terms
- Commercially rigorous: you read a pipeline by grade and conversion, not volume
- A builder, not just a biller: you've coached others to originate and are happy to be measured on the team's numbers
- Comfortable with data and AI tooling
- Confident enough to turn work down
- Keen to work in the office five days a week and lead from the front
