Recycling Assistant

Hourly Rate: £12.71 per hour
Hours: 40 hours per week
Location: Household Waste Recycling Centres across Mid & East Kent, including Herne Bay and Canterbury.

As a Recycling Assistant at FCC Environment, you will provide a high standard of customer service to members of the public by actively encouraging reuse and recycling, while assisting customers with the safe disposal of their waste. You will help ensure Recycling Centres operate safely, efficiently and in line with company procedures and policies, supporting the delivery of an essential frontline service.

Please note: Working patterns may vary by site. Employees based at Herne Bay HWRC work a rotating rota of 6 days on followed by 3 days off.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Delivering excellent customer service and encouraging site users to reuse and recycle
  • Operating the Recycling Centre in accordance with Health & Safety law, site management plans, and company procedures
  • Assisting with daily site inspections and ensuring all records are accurately maintained
  • Promoting the principles of reuse and maximising recycling levels through identification, interception, and education
  • Monitoring container usage and reporting to the Team Leader
  • Ensuring all plant and equipment safety checks are completed and reported
  • Identifying chargeable waste and applying appropriate charges
  • Wearing issued uniforms and PPE at all times
  • Preventing unauthorised persons from interfering with site operations
  • Any other reasonable request to meet operational needs

What Are We Looking For?

  • Experience in a customer-facing setting is desirable, but not essential
  • Experience in a recycling centre or waste/recycling environment is desirable, but not essential
  • No previous knowledge required, but a keen interest in improving recycling rates and diverting valuable items to reuse is important
  • Ability to approach the public and offer assistance
  • Courteous, committed to high levels of customer service, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Good timekeeping, self-motivated, honest, and hardworking
  • Willingness to work weekends and bank holidays (sites are open 7 days a week, closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day & New Year's Day)
  • Flexibility to work at any Mid & East Kent Recycling Centre as required
