Job Purpose

As a Refuse/Recycling Driver, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of waste and recycling collection vehicles across Carmarthenshire. The role involves supervising collection crews, ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements, supporting recycling initiatives, and delivering a high-quality waste collection service to residents and businesses.

Key Duties/Accountabilities

  • Drive and operate refuse and recycling collection vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Carry out daily vehicle inspections and report defects using approved procedures.
  • Supervise and direct refuse/recycling loaders assigned to the crew.
  • Ensure compliance with road traffic legislation and health and safety requirements.
  • Support the loading and collection of refuse and recycling materials when required.
  • Manage route navigation and use in-cab technology, including tachograph functions.
  • Ensure safe transportation of crew members and collected materials.
  • Oversee round activities and resolve operational issues such as blocked access, contamination, and missed collections.
  • Comply with disposal site procedures when unloading waste and recycling materials.
  • Promote recycling initiatives and provide guidance to residents where required.
  • Support other collection crews to ensure service delivery targets are achieved.
  • Complete timesheets, work schedules, vehicle records, and incident reports accurately.
  • Wear and maintain appropriate PPE at all times.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of collection routes and service delivery.

Essential Experience Required

  • Previous experience driving HGV/LGV vehicles.
  • Experience operating refuse, recycling, waste collection, or environmental services vehicles.
  • Experience supervising or directing staff in an operational environment.
  • Experience carrying out vehicle safety inspections and defect reporting.
  • Experience using tachographs and vehicle technology.
  • Experience working within health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and use own initiative.

Essential Qualifications Required

  • Minimum Category C Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Licence.
  • Driver CPC qualification.
  • Relevant tachograph knowledge and experience.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation.
  • Ability to read and follow maps and collection routes.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

Additional Information to Note

  • Working hours: 37 hours per week.
  • Location: Cwmamman Depot, Carmarthenshire.
  • Welsh language skills desirable (Spoken Level 2, Written Level 1).
  • We work on bi-weekly payment schedule.
