6 Month Contract With A Local Authority

Job Purpose

To safely and efficiently operate an HGV2 refuse collection vehicle and undertake refuse collection and loading duties. The postholder will be responsible for providing a reliable waste collection service, ensuring vehicles and equipment are operated safely and in accordance with relevant legislation, Council procedures and health and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate HGV2 refuse collection vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Undertake refuse collection and loading duties as part of a collection crew.
  • Collect household and other waste in accordance with designated routes and service requirements.
  • Safely load refuse and recyclable materials into the collection vehicle.
  • Carry out routine vehicle and equipment checks and report defects or maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure waste is handled, collected and transported in accordance with health and safety and environmental requirements.
  • Work effectively as part of a refuse collection team and follow instructions from supervisors and managers.
  • Maintain a high standard of service when dealing with residents, members of the public and other stakeholders.
  • Complete relevant records and documentation accurately.
  • Ensure the vehicle, equipment and work areas are kept clean and safe.
  • Comply with Council policies, procedures, risk assessments and statutory requirements.
  • Report accidents, incidents, hazards, vehicle defects or other concerns promptly.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the role as required by management.

Requirements

  • Valid HGV Class 2 (Category C) driving licence.
  • Relevant experience driving HGV vehicles, preferably within a waste collection or similar operational environment.
  • Ability to safely operate a refuse collection vehicle and associated equipment.
  • Good understanding of road safety, vehicle safety and relevant health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to undertake manual refuse collection and loading duties.
  • Physically able to carry out the duties associated with refuse collection and loading.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual and able to follow designated routes, schedules and instructions.
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach when dealing with members of the public.
  • Commitment to safe working practices and maintaining a high standard of service.
